CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Sophomore Selina Ta'amilo tossed the best game of her brief collegiate career, striking out a career-best 10 and limiting the 17th-ranked team in the nation to three hits, as #7 UCLA blanked UCF, 2-0, on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I.
The Bruins improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 4-4.
Ta'amilo was masterful in the circle to win her fourth straight start to open the season. She walked just two in her seven innings to extend her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 16 1/3. Ta'amilo set down the first seven of the game and also had a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. She struck out at least one in every frame, including two in the second, fifth and seventh.
Only two runners got to second base off Ta'amilo, with the biggest jam coming in the fourth. The Knights had second and first with one out, but a fielder's choice grounder and a strikeout kept UCF off the scoreboard.
The lone runs in the game came on one play in the third. Freshman Zoe Shaw led off with a double to left-center and senior Allexis Bennett reached on a bunt single. After Bennett stole second, a walk to sophomore Kylee Perez loaded the bases. One out later, sophomore Madeline Jelenicki grounded a ball to short, but Brittany Solis threw wild to the plate, allowing both Shaw and Bennett to score to make it 2-0.
The Bruins play twice on Saturday, facing Notre Dame and Cal Poly back-to-back starting at 3 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available on UCLABruins.com.
