SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The No. 20 UCLA women's tennis team edged No. 74 Utah, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bruins improve to 13-4 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
The Bruins made quick work of the Utes in doubles play, clinching the point on courts 1 and 2. Catherine Harrison and Kristin Wiley struck first for UCLA, downing Brianna Turley and Margo Pletcher, 6-4, at the top of the lineup. Kyle McPhillips and Terri Fleming won the point for the Bruins on court 2 with a 6-4 win over Sarah Richter and Alexia Petrovic. UCLA led Utah 1-0 heading into singles play.
The Utes registered two quick wins at the bottom of the lineup to even the score and then take a 2-1 lead. First, Petrovic swept Laura Luca, 6-0, 6-0, on court 6. Shortly after, Wiley fell to Taylor Calton in straights on court 5.
Alaina Miller responded for UCLA on court 4. After dropping the first set to Utah's Jena Cheng, Miller rallied to sweep the next two sets and even the score at 2-2. No. 18 Harrison regained the lead for the Bruins at the top of the lineup when she defeated Pletcher in straights. UCLA led Utah 3-2 with matches heading into a third set on courts 2 and 3.
The deciding point came from McPhillips on court 2. After splitting the first two sets with Richter, the Bruin senior rallied in the third set to edge her opponent, 7-5, and clinch the match for UCLA.

Next week, the Bruins return home to host the Arizona schools. Friday's tilt with the Sun Devils takes place at 1:30 pm PDT. Saturday's Senior Day showdown with the Wildcats begins at noon.
