No. 9 Bruins Sunk by No. 12 Waves, 5-2

LOS ANGELES โ The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team fell to the No. 12 Pepperdine Waves, 5-2, Sunday at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts. The match, previously set for Feb. 17, had been rescheduled due to rain.
In doubles play, Pepperdine's team of Dzina Milovanovic and Ashley Lahey dispatched the Bruin pair of Gabby Andrews and Kristin Wiley, 6-3, to give the Waves the early edge. Then, in a matchup of two of the top four doubles teams in the nation, No. 4 Ena Shibahara and Jada Hart of the Bruins topped No. 2 Christine Maddox and Mayar Sherif of the Waves, 6-4. Nearly simultaneously, though, the Waves clinched the doubles point, as No. 37 Luisa Stefani and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai defeated Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller on Court 2, 6-4.
The Bruins evened the score in singles play, when Alaina Miller defeated No. 51 Laura Gulbe on Court 4, 6-3, 6-2. The next four matches, however went the way of the Waves in straight sets. Lahey beat Fleming on Court 2, 6-3, 6-4, to give the advantage back to Pepperdine. Runglerdkriangkrai topped Wiley on Court 6 (7-5, 6-3) and Milovanovic clinched the match with her 7-5, 6-4 victory over Andrews. The sophomore's loss on Court 5 marked her first setback in singles of her Bruin career.
The teams played out the remaining matches on Courts 1 and 3. In a top-10 showdown, No. 6 Stefani gave No. 2 Shibahara her second consecutive singles loss, 6-2, 7-6(3). Then, in the only three-set decision of the afternoon, Jada Hart captured the final set on a 10-point tiebreak to defeat No. 17 Sherif of the Waves, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(7).
The Bruins will have less than a week to prepare for their next opponent, No. 10 Baylor. UCLA will travel to Waco for an 11:00 a.m., PT start on Saturday, Mar. 4.
