UCLA Edged by Stanford in Pac-12 Opener, 4-3

LOS ANGELES โ Despite picking up points in doubles and on the top two singles courts, the No. 28 UCLA women's tennis team dropped its Pac-12 opener to the No. 14 Stanford Cardinal, 4-3.
In doubles, the UCLA (6-5) team of Jada Hart and Terri Fleming opened play with an upset victory over the Cardinal's No. 29-ranked duo of Caroline Doyle and Melissa Lord on Court 1, 6-4. With an early edge established, the Court 3 pair of Ena Shibahara and Kristin Wiley also posted a 6-4 win, over Stanford's Caroline Lampl and Emma Higuchi, to clinch the point.
Trailing by a point, the Cardinal (8-1) responded furiously with three consecutive straight-set wins in singles play. No. 73 Lampl defeated the Bruins' Miller on Court 4, 6-4, 6-1, while No. 13 Lord of Stanford dueled with No. 81 Hart, but was able to secure a 6-4, 6-4 win. No. 46 Higuchi put the Bruins on the brink of elimination with a tightly-contested 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kristin Wiley on Court 6 to put the pressure on Courts 1, 5 and 6.
No. 3 Shibahara recovered from a dropped first set to defeat No. 69 Taylor Davidson of the Cardinal, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, to ensure the match would not be lost on the top court. The Bruins' Gabby Andrews and Stanford's No. 67 Emily Arbuthnott also went the distance, as the Cardinal freshman clinched the decision with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.
The teams played out the match on Court 2, where the Bruins' Terri Fleming secured a 10-8 tiebreaker in her second set against No. 36 Doyle of the Cardinal to force a deciding third set. There, Fleming capitalized on her momentum from the previous set to take the 2-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 win and cut UCLA's final deficit to 4-3.
UCLA will look to even its Pac-12 record when No. 12 California visits Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts Saturday. The first half of a doubleheader with the UCLA men's tennis team, play will begin at 12:00 p.m.
