MADISON, Wisc. โ The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team dropped a consolation match Saturday to No. 16 Ole Miss, 4-3, on Day 2 of the ITA Team Indoor Championships. The deciding point was earned via a three-set battle on Court 4.
The Bruins will play once more at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, with South Carolina on deck Sunday in consolation play. Each team will be looking for its first win of ITA Indoors when play begins at 7 a.m. (PT).
UCLA's doubles team of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield topped the Rebels' 27th-ranked pair of Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova on Court 2, 6-2, for the morning's first win. Determined to pull ahead, the Bruin tandem of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart upset No. 11 Alexa Bortles and Arianne Hartono on the top court, 6-3, to give UCLA an early advantage.
In singles action, No. 57 Hart doubled the Bruin lead with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Suk on Court 2. In a matchup of Top-25 players, the Rebels' No. 25 Hartono proved too much against No. 12 Shibahara, notching a 6-1, 6-4 win. Ole Miss quickly pulled even thanks to a straight-set win by Anna Vrbenska on Court 3, 6-2, 6-2, over No. 93 Alaina Miller. The seesaw effort tilted the way of the Rebels next, with Machalova topping No. 74 Fleming on Court 3, 6-3, 6-2, to take a 3-2 lead. Freshman Abi Altick came up big for the Bruins on Court 5 with a straight-set winner of her own, 6-1, 6-4 over Bortles.
Knotted at 3-3, Top-125 players Ayan Broomfield of UCLA (No. 94) and Tea Jandric of Ole Miss (No. 124) traded first sets. Jandric ultimately claimed the third and final set, though, topping Broomfield by a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 score.
