No. 13 UCLA Earns ITA Indoors Win

February 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis

MADISON, Wisc. โ€“ No. 13 UCLA defeated No. 19 South Carolina, 4-1, in an ITA Team Indoor Championships consolation match Sunday. The win at Nielsen Tennis Stadium marked the first of the weekend for the Bruins, who previously dropped 4-3 and 4-2 decisions to Oracle/ITA Top-15 opponents in recent days.

The Bruins' top courts came through when needed most, as the doubles team of Terri Fleming-Jada Hart came out on the winning side of an all-or-nothing decision, while Ena Shibahara tallied a straight-set victory to clinch the overall win.

It was a slow start to doubles play for UCLA, as Alaina Miller and Shibahara fell to Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacher on Court 3, 6-3. The team of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield, which trailed Hadley Berg and Paige Cline by a 4-2 margin earlier in the set, responded with the next three games en route to a 7-5 win to pull the Bruins even. Fleming-Hart also trailed, 5-6, but was able to force a tiebreak against Silvia Chinellato and Ingrid Gamarra Martins. The Bruin tandem took charge in the 13th game, notching a 7-4 win to earn UCLA the match's opening point.

The lead was quickly doubled to 2-0 when Chinellato was forced to retire on Court 4, giving No. 31 Abi Altick of the Bruins a 6-4, 0-1 win. Rohrabacher helped the Gamecocks cut their deficit in half with a straight-set win over Andrews, 6-1, 6-4, on Court 6. No. 57 Hart, who fended off No. 38 Berg in the first set, cruised through the second to a 6-4, 6-0 win that gave the Bruins a 3-1 lead.

It was a race to the finish to see who would clinch the Bruin victory. No. 12 Shibahara and No. 74 Fleming each posted a 6-3 first-set win and looked poised to take the second. Fleming led Gamarra Martins on Court 3, 5-3, but Shibahara used a forehand winner to wrap up a 6-3, 6-2 decision over No. 118 Mia Horvit.

UCLA returns home Friday, Feb. 16, when it welcomes Loyola Marymount to Los Angeles Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. start.
