UCLA Drops ITA Indoors Opener to Texas Tech

MADISON, Wisc. โ The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team fell to No. 8 Texas Tech, 4-2, in Friday's opening round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Bruins will remain in Madison, Wisc. for the consolation draw, which opens Saturday for them with a match against Ole Miss.
The Lady Raiders' Gabriela Talaba and Felicity Maltby proved too strong for Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield, knocking off the Bruin duo by a 6-1 score on Court 2. The remaining two matches needed tiebreakers, with Alaina Miller and Ena Shibahara pulling the Bruins even with a 7-6(2) win over Alex Valenstein and Lana Rush on Court 3. The 16th-ranked Texas Tech tandem of Sabrina Federici and Sarah Dvorak, however, eked out an 8-6 tiebreak win over Terri Fleming and Jada Hart on the top court to give the Lady Raiders the day's first point.
Riding the momentum of the doubles win, Texas Tech's No. 44 Maltby topped No. 57 Hart in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. No. 12 Shibahara quickly cut the Bruin deficit in half with a win over No. 13 Gabriela Talaba, 6-2, 6-4. Despite dropping the first set, Miller would pull the Bruins even with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lana Rush on Court 6. No. 31 Abi Altick of the Bruins took the first set from No. 108 Dvorak on Court 5, but the Lady Raider responded by taking the next two sets and re-establishing the Texas Tech lead with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. Valenstein used a tiebreaker to hold No. 94 Broomfield off in the first set before taking a close second set and the clinching decision, 7-6(2), 6-4.
UCLA will return to Nielsen Tennis Stadium Saturday to take on Ole Miss in a 7 a.m. (PT) consolation match. Live video and live scoring are available through the ITA Indoors EVENT PAGE.
