LONG BEACH, Calif. - The third-ranked Bruins ran their undefeated streak to 21 games, defeating both Michigan State and San Jose State by similar 10-0, five-inning scores on Friday at the LBSU Softball Complex.
In game one against Michigan State (9-11), UCLA posted its 10th mercy-rule victory of the season. The Bruins had 12 hits from nine different players, as junior Brianna Tautalafua, sophomore Bubba Nickles and freshman Briana Perez all had two-hit games.
In the circle, freshman Holly Azevedo improved to 6-0, striking out three in three hitless innings while giving up five walks. Senior Selina Ta'amilo tossed the last two scoreless frames, fanning two and giving up a hit and a walk.
The Bruins got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning, as Perez reached on a leadoff bunt single in front of the plate, moved to second one out later on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left by redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan. After a single to right by Tautalafua and a walk to redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia loaded the bases, Nickles was hit by a pitch with two outs to force in Jordan to make it 2-0.
UCLA added five in the second. Freshman Kinsley Washington led off with an infield single to the right side, moved to second on a walk to Briana Perez and scored on a sacrifice attempt back to the circle by senior Kylee Perez, as the overthrow to first also allowed Briana to get to third and Kylee to get to second. One out later, Tautalafua singled to left to bring in both Perez sisters to up the lead to 5-0. After another out, back-to-back doubles by junior Taylor Pack and Nickles put the Bruins ahead 7-0.
UCLA brought the mercy rule into effect with three in the fifth. Nickles led off with a single to left and scored on a double to right-center by freshman Julie Rodriguez to make it 8-0. A double to center from freshman Malia Quarles extended the lead to 9-0. Washington then re-entered to run for Quarles, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Briana Perez single to make it 10-0.
Versus San Jose State (14-8), Garcia tossed a one-hitter to improve to 9-0, as UCLA notched its 11th mercy-rule win. She struck out four and gave up three walks in her five innings. At the plate, the Bruins had 11 hits from six different players, as Garcia, Jordan, Nickles, Tautalafua and junior Paige Halstead each recorded two-hit games.
The Bruins scored first in the bottom of the second inning, as Garcia led off with a walk, Nickles doubled to right-center, and one out later, Halstead singled to left.
The Bruins busted it open in the fourth, scoring nine times and sending 12 to the plate. Tautalafua led off with a walk, and was pinch-run for by junior Jenna Crawford, who moved to second on a Garcia single, to third on a wild pitch and came home along with Garcia on a three-run homer to left by Nickles to make it 4-0. It was Nickles' fourth homer of the season.
UCLA would load the bases after Pack reached on an error, Halstead singled and Washington was hit by a pitch. Briana Perez grounded into a double play, but Pack scored the Bruins' fifth run. Then after a bunt single by Kylee Perez, Jordan singled to left to bring in junior Imani Johnson, who was running for Halstead, to make it 6-0. Tautalafua followed with a single to right to bring in Kylee Perez and Jordan to increase the lead to 8-0, then Garcia launched a homer to center, her second of the season, to up the advantage to 10-0.
The Bruins play once on Saturday, weather permitting, taking on Boston U. at 2 p.m. at the LBSU Softball Complex. Live stats will be available at UCLABruins.com, and check out twitter.com/uclasoftball for weather updates.
