No. 16 UCLA (6-2-1, 0-1-0 in the Pac-12) will travel to Arizona for a pair of road conference games this weekend. First up is a Thursday date with Arizona (6-2-0, 0-1-0) in Tucson. The match will begin at 7pm MT/PT and will be televised live on Pac-12 Los Angeles. The Bruins will then travel to Tempe for a Sunday, Oct. 6 contest against Arizona State (6-2-2, 0-0-1) at 1pm MT/PT. That match will be live streamed.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Arizona enters the week with a 6-2-0 record and dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to Colorado, 2-1, on a penalty kick goal in the 107th minute. Brooke Wilson leads the Wildcats in scoring with five goals and 12 points, while Jada Talley has five assists, tied for fifth in the Pac-12.
THE SERIES WITH ARIZONA
UCLA is 22-1-1 all-time against Arizona and in unbeaten in the last 14 matchups. The Bruins won last year, 2-0, at home, thanks to goals by Olivia Athens and Viviana Villacorta and a shutout by Teagan Micah. Arizona's lone win in the series came in 2004 by a 1-0 score in Tucson. The last time the two teams played in Arizona was 2017, with the game ending in a 2-2 tie.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
Arizona State started strong, going 5-0 and outscoring opponents, 22-4, but has gone 1-2-2 since. The Sun Devils boasts the Pac-12's No. 2 scoring offense with 28 goals and 80 points and have three players in double-figure scoring in Nicole Douglas (8g, 3a, 19 pts.), Eva Van Duersen (3g, 6a, 12 pts.) and Marleen Schimmer (4g, 4a, 12 pts.).
THE SERIES WITH ARIZONA STATE
UCLA is unbeaten in the last 18 matchups against Arizona State and won last year's meeting, 3-1 at home, behind goals from Maricarmen Reyes, Anika Reyes and Ashley Sanchez. The Bruins took the last meeting in Tempe, 3-0, in 2017. The Sun Devils' only victory in the series came in 2000, 1-0 in overtime in Tempe.
IN THE RANKINGS
UCLA dropped three spots to No. 10 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings and is down nine spots to No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
BRUINS DROP PAC-12 OPENER
UCLA gave up a goal early and a back-breaking goal late in the game as California upset the seventh-ranked Bruins, 2-1, in front of a season-high crowd of 2,253 at UCLA's Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Marley Canales scored the Bruins' lone goal in the 11th minute on a penalty kick after Ashley Sanchez was fouled in the box to tie the game at 1-1, and the Golden Bears won the game in the 88th minute on a goal by Kailee Gifford.
BRUINS HEAD OUT FOR NATIONAL TEAM DUTY
Bruins Teagan Micah and Rachel Lowe have joined the Australia Women's National Team for training camp in Sydney Oct. 1-9. The camp is a lead-up to the Matildas' matches against Chile on Nov. 9 and 12. Also missing this week's games is Jessie Fleming, who will join the Canadian Women's National Team for an Oct. 6 friendly and Oct. 7 closed exhibition in Japan. Micah's absence will give redshirt sophomore Lauren Brzykcy an opportunity to start. Brzykcy has played in just one game this season, starting the second half of the Bruins' 1-0 win over Wisconsin. Last season, Brzykcy played in nine games, starting eight. She was selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team after posting two solo and two shared shutouts and a goals against average of 0.77.
RODRIGUEZ RETURNS
After missing the last 11 games of the season last year with a knee injury, fifth-year senior Anika Rodriguez made her return to competition on Sept. 5 at Santa Clara, seeing 10 minutes of action in the second half. She made her home season debut on Sept. 14 against Wisconsin and played 38 minutes, recording one shot. Rodriguez recorded her first point of the season in the win over Hawaii, recording an assist.
MONEY MARLEY
Junior Marley Canales has been money in the bank for the Bruins on penalty kicks. She is a perfect 3-3 in her career, including 2-2 this season. Most memorably, Canales came in cold to score the winning penalty kick in the 2017 NCAA semifinals against Duke.
MILESTONES FOR MICAH
It's been quite a 2019 for senior goalkeeper Teagan Micah. After spending the summer with the Australian Women's National Team at the World Cup, Micah returned for her final season in Westwood and hit several major milestones during non-conference play. She earned her 200th career save in the season opening shutout win over Iowa State, recorded her 50th career win in the shutout victory over Florida, and earned her 30th career shutout against Wisconsin. She also won a Pac-12 record eighth Goalkeeper of the Week award on Sept. 3 and was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 17 after making a season-high five saves in the shutout win over Wisconsin. Micah, who has four solo and one shared shutout and a 0.80 goals against average, has moved into third on UCLA's all-time saves chart with 218 and moved into a tie for third with 52 career wins. With 30 shutouts, she is one shy of tying for third on UCLA's career list.
SWEET 16 FOR SANCHEZ
Ashley Sanchez ran her school record point scoring streak to 16 games after scoring in the first three games of the season. Her streak ran from Sept. 30, 2018 to Aug. 29, 2019, and she totaled nine goals and 16 assists (35 points) during that time. With just over two seasons under her belt, Sanchez already ranks tied for fourth (with Lauren Cheney) on UCLA's career list with 31 assists and is just seven away from Iris Mora's school record of 38. Sanchez leads the team with four assists and is tied for the team lead in points with 10.
MAINSTAYS
UCLA has kept a fairly consistent Starting XI so far this season, with 10 players starting all nine matches. Teagan Micah, Karina Rodriguez, Lucy Parker, Kaiya McCullough, Delanie Sheehan, Marley Canales, Viviana Villacorta, Ashley Sanchez, Jessie Fleming, and Mia Fishel have been constant throughout the season, although that will change this week with Micah and Fleming out for national team duty. At the forward position, Kali Trevithick started the first four matches before being sidelined with injury. Chloe Castaneda has started four of the last five games, and Kennedy Faulknor earned her first start against Pepperdine. Last season, the Bruins employed 16 different starting lineups, with McCullough and Rodriguez the only two Bruins to start every game. McCullough has made 61 consecutive starts, the only game she has not started coming on Oct. 23, 2016 due to illness. Rodriguez has started in 37 consecutive games. Parker started every game at LSU in 2017 and 2018 and has a streak of 51 consecutive starts. She is the only Bruin who has played all 830 minutes this season.
FRESHMEN IMPRESS
Two Bruin freshmen have cracked the starting lineup this season - forwards Mia Fishel and Kali Trevithick. Fishel leads the team in goals scored (four) and is tied for the team lead in points (10). She also leads all Bruin players in shots (27) and is tied for first in shots on goal (15). Fishel scored the game-winning goal in the Bruins' 1-0 win at Long Beach State and enjoyed her first multiple goal game with a two-goal showing in a 4-0 win against Hawaii. Trevithick, who has eight shots in four games, picked up her first assist in the Bruins' 2-0 win over Florida. Trevithick was a standout in the two exhibition games, recording two goals and two assists. Additionally, Rachel Lowe scored a goal in UCLA's season opener against Iowa State and added an assist against Hawaii. Defender Brianne Riley has played in seven games this season, including a season-high 63 minutes at Hawaii.
UCLA DEBUTS
Six Bruins made their official UCLA debuts in the season opener - junior transfer Lucy Parker, redshirt freshman Shana Flynn, and freshmen Mia Fishel, Kali Trevithick, Rachel Lowe and Brianne Riley. Four more freshmen earned their first collegiate appearances at Hawaii on Sept. 22 - Kylie Kerr, Jackie Gilday, Brecken Mozingo and Janae DeFazio - while Lauren Brzykcy and Maki Umehara made their first appearances of the season.
FLEMING SELECTED SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE
UCLA team captain and international star Jessie Fleming has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award for women's soccer. The award honors student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. Fleming is a two-time World Cup player and Olympic bronze medalist who has already amassed 69 caps for the Canadian Women's National Team. As a sophomore at UCLA in 2017, she was a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and earned first-team All-America honors. During her freshman year in 2016, she led UCLA in scoring with 11 goals and 27 points. In 2018, she missed half the season while on Canadian National Team duty yet still recorded five goals and five assists in just 11 games. This season, she has totaled seven points on two goals and three assists. Fleming is a three-time first-team All-Pac-12 honoree and was Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman of the Year in 2016. She was also just the fourth UCLA freshman ever to earn NSCAA All-America honors. Top Drawer Soccer currently rates her No. 1 in the Top 100 Player rankings.
The Bruins' team captain the last three years, Fleming is also a leader in the classroom, earning honor roll distinction four times and honorable mention Pac-12 All-Academic honors twice in one of the most challenging majors on campus – materials engineering (with an environmental science minor). This summer, she earned a 4.0 GPA in her summer courses. Additionally, she is volunteering with a company that collects and redistributes extra produce from farmer's markets.
SUMMER SCHOOL STANDOUTS
A total of five Bruins earned 4.0 GPAs for their 2019 summer courses, which ended in mid-September - senior Chloe Castaneda, junior Jessie Fleming and freshmen Jackie Gilday, Hannah Mitchell and Kali Trevithick.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bruins will host a pair of doubleheaders with the UCLA men next week. On Thursday, Oct. 10, the Bruin women will host Colorado at 5pm, followed by the Bruin men against Stanford at 8pm.
