UCLA Falls to Arizona, 3-0
October 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer
No. 16 UCLA dropped its second consecutive game, falling to Arizona, 3-0, in Tucson.
Arizona (7-2, 1-1 in the Pac-12) scored its first goal in the 28th minute on a takeaway by Jada Talley in the Wildcats' attacking third. After Lucy Parker received a back pass from Kaiya McCullough, Talley aggressively dispossessed Parker to put herself in a 1v1 opportunity against Lauren Brzykcy. The Bruin goalkeeper forced Talley outside to take her shot, but Talley's shot was still on target to the far post, giving the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.
The Bruins (6-3-1, 0-2-0) had earlier missed a few solid opportunities to strike first. In the eighth minute, Karina Rodriguez sent a cross into the box that found Chloe Castaneda, but Castaneda's shot was blocked by an Arizona defender. Later in the 14th minute, Marley Canales fed Viviana Villacorta in the box. Villacorta chested it down and hit a hard shot, but it struck the right post.
UCLA kept plugging away for the equalizer after going into halftime down 1-0, but a wonder-strike from Brooke Wilson in the 68th minute doubled Arizona's lead. Wilson fired from well beyond 30 yards out into the upper right corner.
Brzykcy made a big stop on a shot by Talley in the 73rd minute to keep the Bruins in it. But Talley wouldn't be denied a second goal in the 85th minute, taking a long ball by Kelcey Cavarra and getting ahead of the Bruin defense to take a well-placed shot to the left post and in for the 3-0 lead.
Both Brzykcy and Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey finished the game with four saves. The Wildcats had a 12-11 shot advantage over the Bruins.
UCLA was playing without senior starters and 2019 World Cup players Jessie Fleming and Teagan Micah, who, along with freshman Rachel Lowe, are out this week on national team duty.
The Bruins will next play at Arizona State on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1pm.
