HONOLULU, Hawaii - Redshirt junior Rachel Garcia struck out 15 and allowed only three baserunners, while redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan and freshman Colleen Sullivan each hit home runs, as the No. 1 Bruins defeated Hawaii by a score of 7-0 on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Garcia allowed only one baserunner to get to third base, posting 1-2-3 innings in the second, third, fifth and sixth and surrendering only a first-inning walk, a fourth-inning single and a seventh-inning hit by pitch. At one point, Garcia struck out seven in a row, as she had three strikeouts in the second, third and seventh innings, two in fourth and fifth and one in the first and sixth.
At the plate, the Bruins (3-0) had nine hits from six different players, as Sullivan, senior Taylor Pack and sophomore Briana Perez each posted two-hit contests.
The first two runs of the game came on one swing of the bat in the top of the second, as Pack singled to left and came home on Jordan's first homer of the season.
In the fourth, Pack recorded a one-out double to center and would score when Jordan reached on an error committed by the Hawaii (2-1) first baseman. Sullivan followed with a deep shot to left-center for her first collegiate homer to increase the lead to 5-0.
In the fifth, the Bruins strung together three singles in a row by Perez, junior Bubba Nickles and Garcia to extend the advantage to 6-0. UCLA scored its seventh run thanks to another error, as Perez had a one-out double and scored when Nickles reached on an error by the Rainbow Wahine second baseman.
