UCLA Seeks Revenge in Weekend Dual at USC

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA track & field team will have the opportunity to knock off a pair of top-10 teams when it faces the USC Trojans in a dual meet on Sunday.
ย
The Bruins are looking to avenge last season's setback vs. their crosstown rivals, which took place at Drake Stadium on April 29, 2018. USC enters this season's dual ranked eighth in the country on the men's side and fourth on the women's side.

While a majority of the dual will take place on Sunday, the action will kick off on Saturday with the men's and women's hammer, beginning at 1 p.m. (PT).

The competition will roll into Sunday starting with the women's pole vault, women's javelin and women's high jump at 11 a.m. The dual will conclude later that day at 3 p.m. with the men's 4x400m relay.

Dual History
While the USC men hold a slight 43-41 series advantage over UCLA in duals that were scored since 1934, the Bruins have brought home dual victories in 41 of the last 52 meetings. The Trojans dominated between 1934-65, capturing 32 consecutive dual wins. Last season, the USC men defeated UCLA 103-53.

For the women, UCLA has a comfortable 21-13 dual series lead over USC, as the two teams competed in the first dual in 1985. The Bruins won 15 in a row during a dominant stretch between 1993 and 2007, however, USC has taken the last five duals since 2014, including an 86-77 win in 2018.ย

Last Meet
UCLA split its squad for the Bryan Clay Multis, Beach Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays last week. It was a fine outing for Christina Chenault, who won the heptathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a career-best 5,585 points, ranking 10th all-time in program history. She registered collegiate-best marks in the 800m (2:11.40), long jump (5.88m; 19-3.5) and javelin (38.78m; 127-2), and also PR'ed in the 100m hurdles (14.96). Overall, Chenault collected first-place finishes in the 800m, shot put and long jump.

At the Beach Invitational, Alyssa Wilson erupted for PR's in both the shot put and discus with marks of 18.02m (59-1.5) and 56.63m (185-9), respectively. Justin Stafford PR'ed in the hammer at 68.57m (225-0) to move to No. 3 all-time in program history, while Jacob Wilson also PR'ed with a mark of 62.45m (204-11). Elleyse Garrett also came up big in the pole vault, clearing 4.31m (14-1.75) to move into a tie for fifth all-time in program history. In the men's pole vault, Michael Fancey cleared a regional-qualifying and career-best 5.21m (17-1).

The Mt. SAC Relays watched Christina Rice finish the 5,000m run with a collegiate-best time of 16:19.00 - the seventh-fastest time in program history. On the final day of the relays, Riley Kelly PR'ed in the 800m with a time of 1:49.01. Claire Markey also came up big, hitting a PR in theย 3000m steeple at 10:38.39.ย

Bruins in the Polls
It's week four of the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field rankings, and both the UCLA men and women still have spots in the top 25. The men garnered 96.61 points in the latest poll to nab a spot at No. 21, including a No. 1 ranking in the West Region. Meanwhile, the women are ranked 24th overall with 91.34 points and seventh in the West.

Wilson Lands Top NCAA Mark, Repeats as Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week
For the second consecutive week, Alyssa Wilson was named the Pac-12 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. A sophomore out of Jackson, N.J., Wilson recorded the top shot put mark in the NCAA at the Beach Invitational at 18.02m (59-1.50). She became just the second Bruin in program history to launch 18 meters and moved to No. 2 all-time in program history in the event. The only other Bruin to achieve 18 meters was Valeyta Atthouse, who threw 18.87m (61-10.75) at the conference championships in 1995. She also PR'ed in the discus, posting an effort of 56.63m (185-9), which to date ranks 13th in the country and improves her positioning at No. 10 in the Bruin record books.
