Women's Tennis Falls to UNC in Indoors Final
February 10, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHICAGO – The No. 4 UCLA women's tennis team came up short in the final round of the ITA National Team Championships on Monday, as it fell to No. 2 North Carolina by a 4-0 score at the XS Tennis Village.
The Bruins (7-1) collected one win on the day, as Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart earned a top-10 doubles victory to force a make-or-break third decision. The Tar Heels (10-0) took that match, though, and never looked back in singles play.
The route to the doubles point was a suspenseful one, with all three decisions necessary. The Tar Heels picked up the first one, with Cameron Morra and Elizabeth Scotty defeating Abbey Forbes and Annette Goulak by a 6-2 score. Morra/Scotty captured the first five games before surrendering two late to the Bruins.
Second-ranked Bolton and Hart kept rolling on the top court, as the pair won its 11th match in a row. The Bruins dispatched of No. 6 Sara Daavettila/Alexa Graham, 6-2, for their third win over a top-25 opponent on the tournament.
Split results on the top two courts turned attention to the matchup between Abi Altick/Taylor Johnson and 29th-ranked Tar Heels Makenna Jones and Alle Sanford. The UCLA pair collected an early break of serve to take a 3-0 lead, only to watch Jones/Sanford rebound with the next five games. Altick/Johnson charged back, as it held serve for 4-5 and broke to ensure at least two additional games would be necessary. Jones and Sanford broke right back, though, and held serve for the 7-5 victory.
UNC earned first-set wins on five of six courts, with Hart providing the lone exception.
Jones took her first frame by a 6-0 score and received some pushback from Goulak in the second on the way to a 6-2, 6-0 victory on Court 5.
Next off was Scotty, whose 6-4, 6-1 win over Altick on Court 4 meant the Tar Heels were one win away from the title.
With Hart and freshman Abbey Forbes on to third sets and freshman Vagramov in a second-set tiebreaker, the championship would be decided on the top court. There, No. 14 Bolton was unable to recover from a lost first-set tiebreaker against No. 7 Morra. The Tar Heel went on to win, 7-6(4), 6-3, and clinch the program's fourth Indoors crown.
The Bruins return to action Friday, Feb. 21, when it hosts No. 21 California for a non-conference match. First serve from the Los Angeles Tennis Center is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., PT.
