Women's Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep of Area Rivals
February 29, 2020 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2/8 UCLA women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of Los Angeles-area rivals Saturday, as it edged No. 11/17 Pepperdine at Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA clinched the win at 4-1 before Pepperdine closed its deficit to 4-3 on the final scoresheet.
Junior Abi Altick recorded the deciding victory for the second time this season. Freshman Abbey Forbes and redshirt senior Jada Hart also picked up singles wins for the Bruins (10-1), who also prevailed twice in doubles play without a loss. Daria Kuczer, Ashley Lahey and Astrid Olsen were victorious for the Waves (6-4).
No. 1 Bolton and Hart bounced back resoundingly from their first doubles loss of the dual-match season, defeating Jessica Failla and Anastasia Iamachkine of Pepperdine by a 6-1 score on the top court. Each team held serve to start, but the UCLA pair took over the rest of the way to improve its record to 15-3 (7-1 in dual matches).
Kuczer and Lisa Zaar of the Waves led 3-2 against Altick and junior Annette Goulak on Court 3 before the Bruins turned the tide. Altick/Goulak collected wins across the final four games, earning its third win in as many matches and its second clincher in a row.
No. 8 Forbes, who suffered her first dual-match singles loss of the season Friday at No. 31 USC, made sure it did not happen again Saturday against 53rd-ranked Jessica Failla. Forbes fended off Failla in the first set and cruised in the second, 6-4, 6-1, to make it 2-0. Forbes has a team-high eight victories versus nationally-ranked opponents, against just two losses.
Lahey, ranked No. 2 in the nation, registered a 6-0 first-set result against No. 12 Bolton on Court 1. Bolton grabbed the first two games of the second set, but Lahey answered by taking the next five en route to a 6-4, 6-0 win that cut Pepperdine's deficit in half.
In a top-50 matchup on Court 3, No. 19 Hart would not let No. 45 Iamachkine force a third set. Iamachkine charged back from 1-4 and 3-5 second-set deficits, but Hart took the final two games and the match, 6-2, 7-5, to improve to 7-0 on the dual-match season.
Zaar forced a tiebreaker in the second set against Altick on Court 4, but Altick took over in the race to seven. The Monroe, La. native completed her 6-1, 7-6(4) victory when a Zaar shot went long. Altick's win marked her third singles win in a row.
With the overall victory decided at 4-1, Goulak retired after dropping a second-set tiebreaker on Court 5. She took six of seven games in the first set versus Olsen. Then, on Court 6, Kuczer handed freshman Sasha Vagramov her first singles loss of the dual-match season, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
UCLA will open conference play Friday, March 6, when it visits No. 22 (Tennis Channel/USTA) California. First serve from the Hellman Tennis Complex is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., PT. The Bruins will complete their trip Saturday (12 p.m., PT), when they take No. 3/6 Stanford at Taube Tennis Center.
