Women's Tennis Wins at Stanford to Snap Streaks

March 07, 2020 | Women's Tennis

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2/3 UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 3/9 Stanford, 4-1, in a rain-delayed conference match Saturday at Taube Family Tennis Center.

The win snapped the Cardinal's regular-season conference winning streak at 38 and gave UCLA its first win at Stanford since 2014.

Junior Annette Goulak clinched the victory for the Bruins (12-1, 2-0 in Pac-12 play). Junior Abi Altick and freshman Abbey Forbes also logged singles wins for UCLA, which outscored Stanford by a 12-1 margin in completed doubles matches to earn the initial point. The Cardinal (10-2) got its lone victory from Angelica Blake to start singles play.

The start of the match was delayed four hours due to rain.

The combination of Altick and Goulak continued its stellar play with a 6-0 defeat of No. 43 Sara Choy and Emma Higuchi on Court 3. Altick/Goulak, 5-0 since its first match as a pair Feb. 21, earned a break of serve to start its latest victory and never looked back.

The top-20 matchup on Court 1 was also controlled by UCLA, as No. 1 Elysia Bolton/Jada Hart surrendered just one game to No. 19 Blake Emily Arbuthnott. Arbuthnott/Blake held serve facing a 0-1 deficit, but could not get back on the board. Bolton and Hart, now 17-3 on the season, have seen opponents muster just two total games during their three-match winning streak.

The Bruins collected four first sets, but Stanford picked up the first point of singles play to tie the overall score. No. 117 Blake registered an overpowering start to her contest with No. 17 Hart before holding on for a 6-0, 6-4 victory on Court 3.

Altick posted UCLA's first singles win of the match, a 6-3, 6-1 upset of No. 97 Janice Shin on Court 4. The victory marked Altick's fifth in as many tries and first of the season against a ranked opponent. She is now 11-3, including 7-1 in dual matches.

No. 8 Forbes took six of seven first-set games from No. 121 Arbuthnott on Court 2, but the match was far from finished. Multiple momentum swings in the second set culminated in a tiebreaker, which itself reached a 5-5 tie before Forbes closed strong. The Raleigh, N.C. native's 6-1, 7-6(5) win improved her record to 23-3 and moved the Bruins one win closer to the overall decision.

With Bolton and freshman Sasha Vagramov locked in third sets, Goulak made her move on Court 5. The Georgia transfer dropped the first four points of her first-set tiebreaker versus Choy and also trailed by 5-1 and 6-3 scores, but charged back for a 10-8 victory. Then, in the second, a serving Choy had an opportunity to knot the set at five games apiece. Goulak would not let that happen, though, wrapping up the Bruins' second win of the season against the Cardinal.

UCLA previously turned in a 4-0 victory over the Cardinal in the semifinal round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago (Feb. 9).

The Bruins will have a two-week break from dual matches before returning to Los Angeles Tennis Center for dates with No. 39 (ITA) Washington State (Saturday, March 21 – 12 p.m., PT) and No. 30 (ITA) Washington (Sunday, March 22 – 12 p.m.).
