Edwards Homer Caps Mercy-Rule Win

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Taylor Edwards hit the first home run of her career, a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, as top-ranked UCLA posted an 8-0, mercy-rule win against Cal Poly on Sunday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 25-1, while the Mustangs fell to 10-13.
Junior Holly Azevedo and freshman Lexi Sosa combined on a three-hit shutout. Azevedo (8-0) struck out four in four innings, giving up three hits. She fanned two in a 1-2-3 first inning. Sosa tossed the fifth, striking out two and allowing one walk. At the plate, seven different players accounted for UCLA's seven hits.
The Bruins scored twice in the first. Junior Kinsley Washington led off with a walk and stole second. One out later, freshman Maya Brady drew a free pass. Redshirt junior Aaliyah Jordan followed with a single to right to bring home Washington with the game's first run. With Brady taking third on the Jordan hit, she came home on a sacrifice fly to left by junior Delanie Wisz to make it 2-0.
UCLA added two more in the third. Washington again led off with a walk and a steal, coming home on a double down the right-field line by junior Briana Perez. After Perez moved to third on a passed ball, she scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Brady to make it 4-0.
In the fourth, freshman Sara Rusconi Vicinanza led off with a double to right-center, and was pinch-run for by sophomore Anna Vines, who moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Sosa single to left.
Three batters got on in the fifth to end the game. Brady started things with a single to center, senior Jacqui Prober reached on a fielder's choice to second and both came home on Edwards' bomb to right to send the Bruins into Pac-12 play on a 10-game winning streak.
The Bruins host No. 15 Arizona State next weekend. The series starts on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. The game will be live streamed for free at UCLABruins.com.
