Bruins Set to Host Two Meets, Compete in Four Total Competitions this Week

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA Track & Field is gearing up for a busy week of competition, taking part in four meets, including a pair of home meets at Drake Stadium.

UCLA is set to host the Jim Bush Legends Invitational (Mar. 24) and the Bob Larsen Track Meet (Mar. 27) this week at Drake Stadium, marking the first home competitions for the Bruins in almost two years. Live results for both meets will be available at finishedresults.com.

Meet Recap: Ben Brown Invitational
UCLA Track & Field finished up its outdoor opener at the Ben Brown Invite, coming away with various individual victories and a team win on the women's side. Maddy Doaneย notched her first of three victories on the day with a win in the 100m, clocking a time of 11.80. Myles Webbย andย Cristian Mooreย went 1-2 on the men's side, notching times of 10.69 and 10.76, respectively. The men's 200m saw Ismail Tuner clock a time of 22.04 for a narrow victory in his UCLA outdoor debut. Sophomoreย Andrew Martinezย took the win in in the 1500m, clocking a time of 3:55.81. Fellow debutantย Dylan Wilburย secured the runner-up position with a time of 3:57.38. The women's 800m saw freshmanย Kate Jendrezakย take second place in her UCLA debut, crossing with a time of 2:14.79.

Juniorย Ilaria Casarottoย opened her 2021 campaign with a victory in the women's javelin competition, going 51.29m (168-3) for the win. Juniorย Lauren McFallย took second place with a career-best toss of 46.84m (153-8), good for the No. 5 spot on UCLA's all-time list. Sophomoreย Mia Cervantesย took the victory in the women's pole vault competition, clearing 3.76m (12-04.00) to separate herself from the field. Kyle Brownย notched the victory on the men's side to secure a Bruin sweep of the pole vault competitions.

Meet Recap: NCAA Indoor Championships
The Bruins qualified a women's 4x400m relay squad to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday, Mar. 13. The quartet ofย Shae Anderson, Catherine Leger, Chinyere Okoro, and Makenzy Pierre-Webster took 10th place at the National Meet, clocking a season-best time of 3:35.23. It was the second-straight season the women qualified for Indoor Nationals; the 2020 meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last Time Out: 2019 Jim Bush Legends Invitational
The Bruins last hosted the Jim Bush Legends Invitational on Mar. 30, 2019, posting 12 event victories on the day at Drake Stadium. The Bruins took the top four positions in the men's shot put competition, with senior Dotun Ogundeji securing the victory with a heave of 19.68m (64-06.75). Alyssa Wilson and Ashlie Blake both posted marks of 16.83m (55-02.75) in the women's competition, but Wilson's superior second attempt gave her the win. Wilson also emerged victorious in the discus and hammer throw. UCLA swept the javelin competitions with wins from Simon Litzell (65.10m, 213-7) and Ilaria Casarotto (46.27m, 151-9). Arturo Sotomayor notched a victory in the 800m with a time of 1:51.68, nearly two seconds clear of his nearest competitor. The Bruins capped the day with a win in the men's 4x400m relay, as the senior foursome of Damion Marshall, Joe Herrera, Leon Powell, and Cameron Stone clocked a time of 3:09.53.

Last Time Out: 2019 Bob Larsen Distance Carnival
UCLA last hosted the Bob Larsen Track Meet on Mar. 29, 2019, back when the competition was called the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival. Robert Brandt notched a victory in the men's 10,000m, going 28:55.27 to move into fifth place on UCLA's all-time list. Erika Adler took second overall in the women's 3000m, clocking a time of 16:16.22 for fifth place in UCLA history in the event. Sophie Scott earned the win in the women's 1500m (4:35.40) while Sotomayor legged out a win in the mile (4:03.07).

Notes on the Bruins
  • UCLA's women's 4x400m relay squad qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 10th overall with a season-best time of 3:35.23.
  • The Bruins return redshirt junior thrower Alyssa Wilson, one of the greatest throwers in UCLA history. Wilson owns school records in the weight and hammer throws, and is a multi-time All-American across indoor and outdoor competitions.
  • Junior sprinter Kenroy Higgins II returns for his second outdoor campaign with the Bruins. He owns the UCLA indoor 60m record with a time of 6.59.
  • Junior sprinter Shae Anderson is set to make her outdoor debut for the Bruins in 2021. She transferred from Oregon after the 2018 outdoor season in which she finished ninth in the 400m at NCAA Outdoors. She owns the UCLA indoor 400m record with a time of 52.07, which she set last season.
  • Four of UCLA's top 10 indoor 200m times are held by current Bruins: Chinyere Okoro (No. 4, 23.83), Meleni Rodney (No. 5, 23.92), Catherine Leger (No. 6, 24.02), and Makenzy Pierre-Webster (No. 8, 24.14).
