MVB Tops Tritons in Three

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team upped its record to 6-0 on the season with a three-set non-league victory over UC San Diego on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the match were 25-15, 25-23, 25-18. Ido David paced the Bruin attack with 20 kills while hitting .633. J.R. Norris IV helped UCLA secure a blocking edge over UCSD with a pair of block solos and three block assists. The Bruins out hit the visitors .442 to .225 for the match.
UCLA opened up a 5-3 advantage to begin set one after a Cole Ketrzynski kill. A Norris kill and block upped the margin to 10-6. David's swing made it 13-9. An Ethan Champlin ace left UCLA in front 20-12. Norris' kill and a Triton error secured the set at 25-15. UCLA hit .684 for the frame.
Set two was a battle which featured 12 ties and six lead changes. UCLA took the early lead, at 6-4, following a Ketrzynski ace. However, UCSD came back to even the score at 13-all. Norris' swing put UCLA up by two, at 16-14, but the Tritons quickly rallied to pull even at 17-all. Three straight Bruin attack errors pushed UCSD in front 18-21. A pair of kills from Daivd ignited a Bruin comeback and tied at 22. Alex Knight and Norris teamed up on a block to break the tie. Champlin followed with a kill and David's spike ended the set at 25-23.
A block from Andrew Rowan and Merrick McHenry propelled UCLA into a 7-4 lead to start set three. The Bruins steadily built the lead up from there and enjoyed a 15-8 edge after a net call on the Tritons. UCSD fought back to tally five straight points to level the score at 16-all. The Bruins answered with three straight of their own and grabbed a 19-16 lead after a McHenry kill. Champlin's swing put UCLA up 22-17 and back-to-back kills by David finished off the set at 25-18.
Rowan was credited with 35 set assists on the night while Champlin and Troy Gooch totaled team-highs of 10 digs each. The Bruins will now take to the road next week for a Friday non-league match at CSUN.
