UCLA Draws 1-1 with California

November 02, 2023 | Men's Soccer

BERKELEY, Calif. – The UCLA men's soccer team continued their unbeaten streak in Pac-12 play with a 1-1 tie at California on Thursday afternoon. The Bruins (7-3-5, 4-0-4 Pac-12) earned the draw from an Andre Ochoa strike in the 81st minute against the Golden Bears (6-5-5, 2-3-3 Pac-12).

With the result UCLA has now gone unbeaten in its first eight league games of the season, and moves into a tie for first place in the conference standings with Oregon State on 16 points. The Bruins also beat Cal 2-1 back on October 1st.

UCLA opened up on the front foot, and tested the Cal backline early on in the opening minute, however Andre Ochoa's shot was wide of the goal.

Six minutes later in the eighth minute the Bears threatened on the break, but the Bruins backline was up to the task and blocked the ensuing shot and the score remained 0-0.

Later in the half freshman keeper Wyatt Nelson made two huge stops for the Bruins in goal. The first happened in the 36th minute when Nelson stopped a point-blank shot with his outstretched right foot, and followed that up with another spectacular stop in the 40th minute. The second stop was a one-on-one save from the Seattle, Washington native, as the Cal attacker was bearing down on goal before Nelson was able to get his fingertips to the ball and push it out for a corner, and the game remained tied at 0-0.

Just moments before the end of the half, Cal's Giancarlo Mota was issued a red card for a reckless tackle in the midfield, and the Bruins were now up a man for the remainder of the match, moments later the referee blew for halftime and the two sides headed into the break knotted up at 0-0.

The second half saw the Bruins open up with the majority of the ball, but against the run of play Cal took a 1-0 lead. A cross was deflected into the back of the net for the Golden Bears.

Jose Contell came close to equalizing in the 65th minute but his header glanced off the crossbar and wide and the Bruins trailed 1-0 with 25 minutes to go.

The Bruins continued to search for the equalizing goal, and with just under 10 minutes remaining UCLA leveled the match. Andre Ochoa took a shot from just inside the 18-yard box and his effort found the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game.

Neither team was able to find a game-winning goal in the closing minutes as the teams shared the points on Thursday. Offensively, the Bruins tallied 10 shots with seven coming on frame, while Nelson made six stops on the day in goal for UCLA.

UCLA continues its road swing at No. 19 Stanford on Sunday. The match is set to kickoff at 4 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
