March 10, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team (19-1) won its 10th straight match in a sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne (12-7) in the second round of the OUTRIGGER Invitational on Friday night in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-21, 25-16.
Freshman Zach Rama led the attack with 12 kills while hitting .409. Ethan Champlin added half of the Bruin total of 10 aces on the night. J.R. Norris IV supplied a season-high six blocks for the Bruins who out blocked PFW by a 9.5 to 4.0 count. This is UCLA's longest win streak since it also had a 10-match streak in 2016. The last time it had a longer streak was when it closed out the 2006 season by winning its last 14 straight matches on the way to defeating Penn State in the national championship match.
UCLA broke a 4-all tie on kills by Guy Genis and an ace from Ido David. A Genis / Andrew Rowan block made it 9-5. Rama's swing lifted the Bruins into a 14-7 advantage. A four-point run by the Mastadons narrowed the margin to 19-17. Grant Sloane and Norris combined for a block to result in a 21-17 edge. Sloane added a kill for a 23-19 lead and then finished off the set with another spike for a 25-20 win. UCLA hit .409 for the set.
The Bruins surged to a 6-1 lead to begin set two behind the serve of Champlin who totaled a couple of aces during the start. PFW rallied to close to 10-9 with a strong service game and then took the lead, at 13-14, on a block. After tying the score at 14 on a kill, Champlin stepped to the service line for seven straight serves, including two more aces, as UCLA advanced to a 20-14 lead. The Mastadons tallied the next three points to narrow the gap to 20-17. Rama's spike ended that run and then took advantage of a series of PFW errors to go up 24-20. Another Rama smash ended the set at 25-21.
UCLA scored four of the first five points of set three. Purdue Fort Wayne closed to 7-6. A Rowan ace made it 10-7. Champlin and Norris followed with kills for a 12-7 lead. A Rama kill put UCLA in front 17-11. Cooper Robinson added a kill for 19-13. Cole Ketrzynski's swing pushed the margin to 21-14. Sean McQuiggan came on to serve the Bruins to 23-15. A Genis block ended the set and the match at 25-16.
The 10 aces marked the fifth time this season that UCLA has served for double-digits. Champlin's total of five aces was a season-high for the junior who had a career-best six in a match last season against CUI. Rowan added three service winners while recording at least one ace for the ninth straight contest. The Bruins will take the court on Saturday night at 9 p.m. PT against top-ranked Hawai'i. Next week, UCLA will return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play with a pair of matches at No. 12 Stanford.
