No. 2 Bruins Take Care of Business in Utah, Defeat BYU, 7-2
May 01, 2023 | Softball
PROVO, Utah โ The No. 2 UCLA softball team picked up its fourth win in Utah in four days after defeating BYU by a score of 7-2 at Gail Miller Field on Monday afternoon.
ย
The Bruins (48-4, 21-3) used a four-run fourth inning to pull away from the Cougars (28-14, 7-2). Two base hits and one passed ball later put runners on second and third base for Alyssa Garcia who brought both home thanks to an error by the BYU second baseman, stretching UCLA's lead to 3-1.
ย
Janelle Meoño slapped a ball into center field to plate another. The center fielder was one of four Bruins to record two hits on the day. Kelli Godin pushed both Meoño and herself into scoring position on a bunt single. After reaching first, Godin toyed with the BYU catcher and forced a throw to get into a pickle and move Meoño over to third. UCLA scratched one more run across with Meoño scoring on a passed ball as a result of Godin's clever base running.
ย
UCLA put its first run on the board in the first inning. Maya Brady recorded her 29th extra-base hit of the season with a double to center field and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Woolery to right field. Brady, who went 2-for-4 today, improves her batting average to .454 which leads the Pac-12 Conference.
ย
Kennedy Powell's second base hit of the day was a two-RBI double that was powered into the right center gap in the seventh inning. The Bruins now have three hitters batting above .400 through 52 games with Woolery at .409 and Powell at .402.
ย
In the circle, Brooke Yanez earned her 15th win of the season. The left-hander allowed three hits and surrendered one run coming via a solo shot by first baseman Huntyr Ava in the fourth inning.
ย
Megan Grant starred defensively for the Bruins turning two double plays after moving from designated player to first base. Grant's second double play in the bottom of the fifth was most impressive. The NFCA Freshman of the Year Finalist laid out for a diving grab on a line out and slapped the first base bag to end the inning.
ย
Freshman Taylor Tinsley provided two innings of spotless relief. She gave up just one hit and struck out one batter.
ย
UCLA closes the regular season next Friday on May 5 at Easton Stadium in a double-header versus Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. (PT) and San Diego State at 6 p.m. (PT). The games will be available for viewing on the UCLA Live Stream.
