No. 4 Bruins Defend Title at The Match in the Desert

January 22, 2024 | Women's Golf

GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The No. 4 UCLA women's golf team successfully defended its title at The Match in the Desert at Superstition Mountain Golf Club Monday, scoring the course for a 17-under 271.

The Bruins tied the program record for 18-hole score in relation to par, matching the 17-under UCLA shot at the 2018 Golfweek Conference Challenge. Today's result also marks the second victory in Alicia Um Holmes' first season as head coach (Windy City Collegiate Classic).

"Last night, we challenged the team to do two things: stay in the moment and take a good pre-shot breath. They were able to do both today and good things happened for us," Um Holmes said. "Our girls stuck to their own games, and it was great to see them converting their birdie opportunities. The entire team finished in red numbers, highlighted by Alessia's 6-under round and Natalie's 5-under UCLA debut. Really cool to come out with the trophy while tying our school record for lowest single-round team score."

Redshirt junior Alessia Nobilio placed runner-up with a career-best score of 6-under 66. The result was Nobilio's second runner-up finish of her career and first since her freshman season at the 2021 Blessings Collegiate Invitational. Nobilio dialed up seven total birdies and just one bogey in her round.

Junior transfer Natalie Vo signed off on the lowest 18-hole score of her collegiate career in her UCLA debut, shooting a 5-under 67. Her fourth-place finish was also a career best. Vo recorded six birdies and one bogey.

Zoe Antoinette Campos, Tiffany Le and Kate Villegas all tied for sixth at 3-under. The trio combined for 16 birdies between them.

Arizona finished three strokes behind UCLA at 14-under 274 for second place. All five teams shot under par.

The Bruins make their return to the Therese Hession Regional Challenge at nearby Palos Verdes Country Club from Feb. 4-6 for their next tournament. UCLA placed 11th out of 16 teams at last year's showing, led by Campos who tied for 12th (+2, 215).
