Leverette Records Career-High 29 Kills in Defeat to No. 10 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. โ Cheridyn Leverette recorded a career-high 29 kills in UCLA's five-set defeat to No. 10 Purdue, Thursday night inside Holloway Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-27, 20-25, 25-19, and 11-15.

Leverette enjoyed the best night of her career, racking up a stunning 29 kills on 50 attempts, good for a hitting percentage of .480. She tallied 29 total points, also a career-best for the junior, while ascending into double-digits for the 15th consecutive match.

Leverette's performance marks the highest kill tally by a Bruin since Mac May's 39-kill showing at Washington State on Oct. 3, 2021.

The Bruins (8-8, 2-5 Big Ten) are just the third team to take Purdue (14-4, 5-2 Big Ten) the distance this season. The nationally-ranked Boilermakers hit .325 in the match, hitting above the .300 mark in four of the five frames. Purdue was led by its All-American, Eva Hudson, who went for 24 kills on the night.

UCLA hit .261 collectively and held the advantage in the kills column 74-69.

Anna Dodson hit .292 in her 12-kill display and Kiki Horne was the other Bruin in double figures, knocking down 12 kills of her own. Leilani Dodson chipped in with eight kills at an efficient .412.

Setter Audrey Pak eclipsed the 50-assist mark for the fourth time in the last five matches, collecting 51 assists, seven digs, and four kills.

Four Bruins finished with double-digit digs including Sydney Breon's team-high 17. Kate Reilly snuffed out 11 digs while Peyton Dueck and Grayce Olson collected 10 apiece.

The opening set showcased exceptional volleyball, with both teams achieving hitting percentages above .300. Leverette had the hot hand for the Bruins, connecting on eight of her ten swings for a monster start to the contest. UCLA surged ahead with a 4-0 run, initiated by two service aces from Reilly and a kill from A. Dodson. The Bruins maintained their momentum at the service line when Pak delivered an ace and Olson added a kill, extending the lead to 20-15.

However, the Boilermakers, energized by their home crowd, rallied to tie the score at 21-21 with a 6-1 run. Purdue's Ryan McAleer then recorded consecutive service aces, giving the hosts a two-point advantage. UCLA showed its resilience when it replied with a 4-0 run, featuring two kills each from A. Dodson and Leverette, to secure the first set.

It was another blistering start for UCLA in the second set when Leverette continued her brilliance, adding seven more kills in this set to lead the Bruins' offensive efforts. UCLA appeared poised to secure a two-set advantage after building a 24-18 lead, but Purdue mounted an improbable comeback, fending off five set points while rallying to win eight of the last nine points to unexpectedly claim the second set, 27-25.

Leverette's 28th kill of the match brought the score to 9-8 after a quick 3-1 surge from UCLA, but the Boilermakers held on, taking the set 15-11 to escape with the win. The Bruins fall to 1-4 in five-set matches this season.
