UCLA Falls to No. 21 USC

LOS ANGELES โย The UCLA women's volleyball team fell to No. 21 USC in straight sets on Thursday night inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Set scores were 21-25, 19-25, 19-25.
Junior Cheridyn Leverette achieved her 19th consecutive match with double-digit kills, leading the team with 15 at a hitting percentage of .178.ย
Freshman Kate Duffey made her first career start, stepping in at the setter position for the injured Audrey Pak. The Ventura, Calif. native notched 31 assists, six digs, two blocks, and one ace.ย Defensively, graduate Kate Reilly was the only Bruin with double-digit digs, recording 10 for the night.
The Bruins (10-10, 4-7) hit .200 collectively while the Trojans (17-4, 7-4) posted a hitting percentage of .362. Ally Batenhorst led all hitters with 16 kills at a .536 clip and Jadyn Livings tallied 10 kills. Adonia Faumunia and Leah Ford each contributed seven kills in the contest.

Leverette recorded seven kills in the opening set, achieving a hitting percentage of .312. She initiated an early 4-1 run for UCLA with consecutive kills. However, the visitors responded with a 5-0 scoring run to reclaim the lead until Leverette delivered a powerful kill for the side out. USC then mounted another surge, establishing a 15-11 lead at the media timeout before extending their advantage to 23-17, prompting another timeout from the UCLA bench. The Bruins' fought off three set points, but ultimately fell 25-21 in the first set.

The second set saw both teams trade points in the early stages until USC gained a 12-9 advantage following a 3-0 scoring run. A. Dodson came up with a stuff to bring the Bruins within one (16-15) and after another USC surge, Duffey delivered a crucial dump kill to make the score 20-18. However, the Trojans concluded the set on a 5-1 run to take a commanding two-set lead in the match.
