Bruins Draw With Penn State, 2-2
October 04, 2024 | Men's Soccer
University Park, Pa. – The UCLA men's soccer team drew 2-2 with Penn State on Friday night at Jeffrey Field on the campus of Penn State. Jose Contell and Artem Vovk scored the goals for the Bruins in the tie.
Contell tallied a team-leading three points on the night with a goal and an assist for UCLA (4-3-4, 1-2-2 Big Ten), while Wyatt Nelson made four saves in goal for the Bruins. Caden Grabfelder and Ben Madore each had two points to lead the way for Penn State (4-5-1, 1-2-2 Big Ten).
In the 13th minute, Contell got the Bruins on the board. Pablo Greenlee picked up the ball on the right side at the halfway line and dribbled halfway into Penn State's half. The senior then picked out Contell, who was crashing the box. Contell then headed the ball over the onrushing Penn State goalkeeper, putting UCLA up 1-0.
Sveinn Hauksson had another great chance for the Bruins in the 31st minute. Nico Cavallo burst down the left side before finding Hauksson, whose shot from just outside the 18-yard box was headed for the top left corner before Penn State's keeper caught it, keeping the Bruins up 1-0.
Neither team would score in the final 15 minutes of the half, and despite the Bruins four corners in quick succession in the final minutes of the half, UCLA took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Freshman Artem Vovk put UCLA up a pair in the 53rd minute. Jose Contell picked up the ball on the left wing and sent a low cross across goal that found Vovk. The freshman took a touch to settle the ball before taking a shot with his left foot that found the bottom right corner of the net, putting UCLA up 2-0. The goal was Vovk's second of the season.
With 15 minutes to go in the game the Nittany Lions got one back. Caden Grabfelder picked up the ball from well outside the box and took a shot that went past Nelson in goal for the Bruins, and made it a 2-1 game.
Penn State tallied their second of the game four minutes later in the 79th minute. This time Ben Madore took a shot from right at the 18-yard box and hit the inside of the post and past Nelson to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bruins tried to find the third goal of the night to retake the lead but, despite a flurry of chances in the final few minutes, were unable to do so and the game finished in a draw at 2-2.
