October 05, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES โ Graduate middle blocker Anna Dodson tallied a career-high 11 blocks in UCLA's five-set defeat to Michigan on Saturday night inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
ย
Set scores were 24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 13-15.
ย
For the second straight match, the two teams were evenly matched in nearly every statistical category. The Bruins (7-6, 1-3 Big Ten) were dominant on the block, racking up 15 total blocks while the Wolverines (13-2, 3-1 Big Ten) mustered just six.
ย
A.Dodson was involved in 11 stops, with three solo blocks to her name. Junior outside hitter Grayce Olson came up with four blocks in addition to her season-high 16 kills (.400).
ย
Reaching double-digit kills for the 12th straight match was junior Cheridyn Leverette, registering 16 to match the team-high with Olson.
ย
Graduate setter Audrey Pak made it three consecutive matches with a double-double and at least 50 assists. The Moraga, Calif. native handed out 50 assists while collecting 14 digs.
ย
Senior libero Peyton Dueck went for a season-high 23 digs and freshman Kiki Horne got into double figures for the ninth time this year with her 12 kills.
ย
The Wolverines used a late surge to prevail in a back-and-forth opening set. Pak and A. Dodson teamed up for a massive block to fend off a set point, but Michigan did just enough to snatch set one.
ย
UCLA established an early 9-3 advantage in the second set, propelled by an ace from Joy Umeh and a solo block by Pak. The visiting team responded with a 4-1 run, narrowing the gap to three points. However, decisive kills from Leverette and Olson regained momentum for the Bruins. Leilani Dodson contributed an ace, followed by another kill from Olson, culminating in a 4-0 run that secured the set victory and leveled the match at 1-1. Defensively, the Bruins shined, limiting Michigan to a hitting percentage of .000 in this set.
ย
Olson caught fire in the third set, tallying six total kills to pace a prolific UCLA attack that hit .316 in the frame. The junior closed the set with four consecutive kills to give the Bruins the lead in the match.
ย
After a fourth-set victory by the Wolverines, the Bruins entered the fifth set for the second straight match.
ย
Michigan's Valentina Vaulet, who recorded six service aces in the match, utilized her top-spinning jump serve to deliver consecutive aces, initiating a 4-1 run for the visitors. Olson responded with a block to regain the side out, followed by two additional blocks from Pak. Despite Olson's three kills in the set, Michigan ultimately secured the victory by clinching the final set with a score of 15-13.
