Bruins Bounce Back with Win Over Rutgers

November 07, 2024 | Women's Volleyball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. โ€“ The UCLA women's volleyball team cruised to a straight-set victory over Rutgers on Thursday night inside College Avenue Gymnasium.
ย
Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.
ย
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Bruins (11-11, 5-8) snapped a six-set losing streak, returning to form with a .319 hitting percentage thanks to the return of setter Audrey Pak from injury.
ย
Rutgers (5-19, 0-13) remains winless in Big Ten play after failing to have any player reach double-digit kills against UCLA's stifling defense.
ย
Anna Dodson led the Bruins with 11 kills, hitting an impressive .588 for her most efficient double-digit performance of the season. The preseason All-Big Ten selection also added four blocks.
ย
Leilani Dodson contributed eight kills at a career-best .636 hitting percentage and recorded four blocks on defensive end.
ย
Pak registered a double-double in her comeback, finishing with 29 assists and connecting on all four of her swings for four total kills on the night.
ย
Cheridyn Leverette's streak of double-digit kill games ended at 20. She was just the fifth Bruin to achieve that feat in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present).
ย
UCLA surged to an early 5-1 lead after powerful kills from A. Dodson and L. Dodson. The momentum continued as L. Dodson delivered back-to-back aces, propelling the Bruins to an 11-5 advantage. Despite a spirited response from the hosts, who twice cut the deficit to four, UCLA maintained its composure and secured a 25-19 victory in the opening set. L. Dodson was flawless in the first set, going 4-for-4 to lead the Bruins' offensive charge. The Bruins dealt three service aces and limited the Scarlet Knights to a hitting percentage of just .179 in the first frame.
ย
A thundering kill from A. Dodson ignited a 4-1 start for the women of Westwood in the early stages of the second set. UCLA's defense was formidable, racking up four blocks and showcasing an efficient attacking display with 17 kills and just three attack errors, hitting .412 for the frame. The Scarlet Knights mounted a late comeback, winning six straight points to force head coach Alfee Reft to call a timeout. However, the Bruins held their ground, securing a 25-20 set win. A. Dodson was instrumental, contributing three kills and a block to lead the charge.
ย
ย
Two straight kills from L. Dodson sparked a 5-2 start to the third set for UCLA. Leverette started receiving the bulk of the swings, registering four kills to help extend the advantage to 8-4. After A. Dodson notched two kills and a pair of blocks, the Bruins pushed their lead to eight. Rutgers whittled the deficit to three points, but freshman Kiki Horne delivered two consecutive kills to keep the hosts at bay. Pak concluded her excellent return from injury with a kill on match point to clinch UCLA's first win over the Scarlet Knights.

UCLA looks for its second straight victory when it takes on Maryland on Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. PT. The match will be available for viewing on B1G+.
