No. 25 Men's Tennis Blanks Washington to Complete Road Sweep
April 07, 2024 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE โ The No. 25 UCLA men's tennis team collected the doubles point and rode that to three straight-set singles wins in its 4-0 victory against Washington at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Alexander Hoogmartens had a two-win day, including the clincher. Govind Nanda โ who also won twice โ and Jorge Plans Gonzalez also prevailed for the Bruins (10-6, 2-2 Pac-12). The Huskies dropped to 8-11 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
A pair of 6-1 decisions set the stage in doubles play. First to finish was the UW's 39th-ranked tandem of Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn, which dispatched Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli on Court 1. UCLA's Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels answered on Court 2, where they bested Brett Pearson and Nedim Suko. That turned all eyes toward Court 3. In the end, Hoogmartens and Nanda triumphed 6-3 over Heman Nama and Ivan Sodan for their fifth straight win.
No. 22 Nanda raced out to the fastest first-set win of the day. The Bruins collected four in all. Nanda would also be first to complete a second set, doing so with a victory. He rallied to seize the final three games and beat Bouchelaghem 6-0, 7-5 on the top court. The singles win was Nanda's 50th of his career.
Plans Gonzalez continued his winning ways, prevailing for the sixth time in seven completed contests, on Court 6. His 6-3, 6-3 victory opposite Pearson moved UCLA just shy of the deciding point.
For the second time in three matches, Hoogmartens sealed a road win for the Bruins. Eight days separated his fourth-point-earning victory at USC (March 29) and his 6-4, 6-2 result over Suko on Court 4, which sent UCLA home with a sweep of its Pacific Northwest league mates.
The Bruins continue Pac-12 play at Los Angeles Tennis Center Friday, April 12, when they meet No. 18 Stanford at 1:30 p.m. PT. A visit by California follows Sunday, April 14 at 12 p.m.
