UCLA Falls in Pitcher's Duel to Oklahoma, 1-0
June 01, 2024 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – The sixth-seeded UCLA softball team (43-11) fell to second-seeded Oklahoma 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in the winner's bracket of the Women's College World Series at Devon Park. Oklahoma extended its winning streak in the WCWS to 19 games, snapping the Bruins' 14-game winning streak (season) in the process.
The old-fashioned pitcher's duel was highlighted by the Sooners' ace, Kelly Maxwell, who racked up 11 strikeouts, including three against Maya Brady and another two on Sharlize Palacios, for a complete-game, two-hit (both singles) shutout.
Bruin pitchers Kaitlyn Terry and Taylor Tinsley kept UCLA in the game, combining to allow just four hits to the Sooners (56-6). Oklahoma's lone run was tied for its fewest in a game this season. Terry pitched three scoreless innings but allowed a home run, and Tinsley finished off the final two innings without allowing a run. Terry fell to 21-2 on the year, giving up just three hits while tallying four strikeouts. Tinsley finished with two strikeouts while allowing just one bunt single.
Terry got out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning with two outs and bases loaded when she struck out Kinzie Hansen. Terry stranded another Sooner on base in the bottom of the second.
But the Sooners were able to break through in the bottom of the third when Tiare Jennings led off the inning with a solo shot on the first pitch swinging to center field. Terry showed she wasn't rattled by striking out the next batter. After giving up a single, she would get some defensive help from center fielder Janelle Meoño, who robbed Kasidi Pickering of a home run with a leaping catch over the fence. Then Terry recorded another strikeout of Hansen to keep the score at 1-0.
Terry would also pitch the fourth, stranding another Sooner on base in a hitless inning, her last of the game.
Tinsley came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth and opened with a three up, three down inning. She retired the first two batters of the sixth, which included her first strikeout of the game, sitting down Pickering. Rylie Boone would get the Sooner's fourth hit of the game on a bunt single, but Tinsley responded with a strikeout of Avery Hodge to get out of the inning.
The Bruins had one final chance in the top of the seventh. But Maxwell pitched a 1, 2, 3 inning, which culminated when Brady grounded out to second.
Jordan Woolery singled up the middle in the fourth inning for the Bruins' first hit of the game. Megan Grant got the only other hit for UCLA in the sixth inning. Both teams ended the game with seven runners left on base.
UCLA returns to action at the WCWS on Sunday, June 2, where they will face eighth-seeded Stanford in an elimination game at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
