Bruins Blank Broncos, 1-0

August 25, 2024 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES - No. 6/4 UCLA recorded its fourth shutout in as many games, defeating No. 11/23 Santa Clara by a score of 1-0. Junior Sofia Cook provided the only scoring needed, blasting a 25-yard shot to the right corner in the 41st minute.

The Bruins (4-0) kept the Broncos (3-1) off the board with strong possession, particularly in the second half, and a stout defense led by Lilly Reale, Jayden Perry and Quincy McMahon, who allowed just four shots. UCLA goalkeeper Ryan Campbell made two saves, one in each half against Kennedy Schoennauer, who had entered the game with four goals already this season. Campbell stopped a Schoennauer backheel attempt in the box in the 17th minute, as well as the Broncos' only shot attempt in the second half, which came in the 81st minute.

Cook and freshman Jordan Geis were dangerous for the Bruins throughout the game, each totaling three shots on goal. Cook had the first attempt of the game in just the second minute but was saved by Santa Clara goalkeeper Marlee Nicolos, who finished the game with nine saves. Geis nearly put UCLA ahead in the 17th minute, but Nicolos left her line to make the stop. Nicolos also made a nice save on a long-distance shot by Geis in the 28th minute and made a fingertip save on a Sophie Reale strike in the 33rd minute.

But there was not much Nicolos could do on Cook's goal at 42:06. After the Bruins earned a free kick at midfield, Bridgette Marin-Valencia hit Cook outside the box. Cook dribbled forward and then banged a right-footed shot from about 25 yards out into the right corner for the go-ahead goal, her first of the season.
UCLA had a few chances to add to the scoring total in the second half, taking 10 shots, but Nicolos saved four, including a left-footed shot by Cook in the 65th minute and a long-distance shot by Geis in the 69th. Geis had another opportunity in the 70th after making a steal, but her shot from the top of the box missed just high.

The Bruins will face another ranked team on Wednesday, Aug. 28 when No. 4/10 BYU comes to Wallis Annenberg Stadium. It will be the first-ever UCLA home game televised on Big Ten Network.
