UCLA Football Drops 42-13 Decision Against Indiana

PASADENA, Calif. – The UCLA football team dropped a 42-13 decision to Indiana in the Bruins' first-ever Big Ten Conference game before a crowd of 47,811 at the Rose Bowl on Saturday evening.
UCLA (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) trailed by a 21-7 margin at halftime against Indiana (3-0, 1-0), pulling to within 21-10 early in the third quarter. From that point, Indiana outscored the Bruins by a 21-3 margin.
"Indiana came out and played a great game," said UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster. "They came out and executed, played good. Offensively, we were not able to stay ahead of the chains like we would like to. Defensively, they played a pretty good first half, with the offense putting the defense in kind of bad situations. But it is a learning experience for both sides of the ball, and we have to continue to improve."
Indiana added one touchdown in the third quarter to lead, 28-10, before the Bruins kicked a field goal early in the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers scored their fifth touchdown of the game with under eight minutes to play, pushing their margin to 35-13, before adding another touchdown with 5:28 left in the contest.
Bruins' quarterback Ethan Garbers completed 14 of 23 passes for 137 yards in UCLA's first home game of the season. Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke was 25-for-33, throwing for 307 yards and four touchdowns.
Indiana was effective on third-down opportunities, converting on nine of 12 third downs. In addition, the Hoosiers were 5-for-5 from within the redzone.
Indiana led by a 21-0 margin midway through the second quarter before UCLA scored a touchdown with under one minute to play in the second half, reducing the Hoosiers' advantage to 21-7.
The Bruins used a nine-play, 78-yard drive to get on the board with 42 seconds remaining in the first half. After a 20-yard run by Garbers down to the 1-yard line, T.J. Harden punched the ball through for a one-yard touchdown carry.
Indiana jumped ahead of UCLA, 14-0, early in the first quarter. The visiting Hoosiers scored a touchdown on their first offensive drive and later capitalized on a fumble by the Bruins, deep in their own territory.
Indiana's opening 12-play drive covered 75 yards, culminating on a 3-yard pass from Kurtis Rourke to Miles Cross at the 8:31 mark.
The Hoosiers built a 14-0 cushion with 7:28 left in the opening quarter, as Rourke fired a 14-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Ke'Shawn Williams. Indiana moved the ball 17 yards in three plays after Bruins' quarterback Ethan Garbers fumbled the ball on UCLA's 17-yard line.
Indiana added its third touchdown of the opening half on a 1-yard touchdown carry by Justice Ellison, completing a 12-play and 90-yard drive for the Hoosiers to make the score 21-0.
UCLA returns to action at No. 16 LSU on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Bruins' game at Tiger Stadium will begin at 12:30 p.m. (PT), nationally televised on ABC.
