IN THE RANKINGS ย
UCLA has six gymnasts ranked in the Top 25 of the week two national rankings, which are based on average score. Chae Campbell is the lone all-arounder, ranking 16th, and she also ranks 14th on floor. Jordan Chiles ranks ninth on vault and 25th on bars. Brooklyn Moors once again has UCLA's highest individual ranking, ranking fifth on floor. Two Bruins are ranked on beam - Emma Malabuyo (eighth) and Emily Lee (20th). Katelyn Rosen makes her rankings debut this season, checking in at 10th on bars. As a team, UCLA ranks 11th overall, fourth on beam and floor and 12th on vault. ย  ย

ABOUT THE TERRAPINSย
Maryland opened up its season last weekend with a third-place finish at the five-team Lone Star Collegiate Invitational, scoring 195.400. The Terrapins hit 24-for-24 routines and had an event high of 49.100 on floor exercise. Graduate Alexa Rothenbuescher tied for second on floor with a 9.900 and is now nationally ranked No. 14 on the event. Maddie Komoroski ranks 20th nationally on beam with a 9.875 average. Maryland ranks 15th on floor, 22nd on bars and 23rd on beam. Last season, the Terrapins finished a program-best fifth at the Big Ten Championships. ย  ย

LAST TIME OUT
UCLA won session 3 of the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad on Jan. 11, posting the third-highest score in the nation, 197.550. The Bruins easily outdistanced its competition by over a point, outscoring second-place Kentucky (196.500), third-place Ohio State (196.425) and fourth-place Arkansas (195.875). With the weight of devastating wildfires back home, the Bruins banded together to compete for the city of LA and came through with an inspired 24-for-24 performance. UCLA began the meet with a 49.475 on balance beam and never let up, scoring a national-best 49.600 on floor exercise in rotation two, a 49.100 on vault and a 49.375 on uneven bars. Emma Malabuyo earned the beam win with a 9.925, Jordan Chiles scored a near-perfect 9.975 to win floor, and Frida Esparza captured the bars title with a 9.925. ย  ย ย

CHILES, MALABUYO WIN FIRST BIG TEN AWARDS
Jordan Chiles and Emma Malabuyo have become the first UCLA gymnasts ever to earn Big Ten Conference Weekly Awards, as Chiles was named the conference Gymnast of the Week and Malabuyo the Co-Event Specialist of the Week. Both gymnasts played big roles in UCLA's dominating win at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad. Chiles posted high marks on three events, winning the floor exercise with a nearly-perfect 9.975, tying for third place on vault with a 9.925 and tying for fifth on uneven bars with a 9.850. Her 9.975 on floor was her 26th career score of 9.975 or higher. Malabuyo scored 9.925 on both of her events, tying for first on beam and fourth on floor. ย  ย ย

GOLDEN GIRL RETURNS ย
Olympic gold medalist and two-time Olympian Jordan Chiles made her much-anticipated return to UCLA after a one-year absence to train for the Olympics. Chiles, who rejoined the team on Dec. 14 after the fall quarter ended, has jumped right in with the Bruin squad, competing in three events in each of the first two meets despite limited training time. She earned her first victory of the season at the American Gold Classic in week one with a first-place score of 9.900 on vault and followed it up with a floor win at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad with a nearly-perfect 9.975, her 26th career score of 9.975 or higher. During Chiles' last NCAA season in 2023, she captured the NCAA uneven bars and floor exercise titles and helped lead UCLA to a fifth-place NCAA finish and Pac-12 regular season co-championship.ย

GIMME MOORS ย
2020 Canadian Olympian Brooklyn Moors has competed on three events in both meets this season, marking the first time she has done so since Feb. 27, 2022. The graduate student has been mostly a floor specialist the last two seasons while dealing with injuries but has come in strong for her final season, adding vault and beam back into her repertoire. Moors won floor exercise at the season opener with a 9.900 and scored 9.825 on just her second beam routine in three years. At the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, she tied her career-high on floor with a 9.950 and added scores of 9.800 on vault and 9.775 on beam. She currently ranks fifth in the nation on floor, UCLA's highest individual ranking.

FOLLOW THE LEE-DER ย ย
In her usual No. 1 spot on balance beam, leadoff legend Emily Lee set the tone for an outstanding meet for the Bruins at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, kicking off the competition with a 9.900 on beam. The Bruins ran off four additional scores of 9.875 or higher, including a meet-winning 9.925 from Emma Malabuyo and a 9.900 from Katelyn Rosen, giving UCLA a starting score of 49.475 and a lead that was never threatened. In her career as a leadoff performer on beam, Lee is averaging 9.847 and has scored 9.900 or higher 55% of the time (16 times in 29 meets). A queen of consistency, Lee has hit all 83 of her routines in her career without a fall, with her only sub-9.6 score coming due to a start value deficiency. ย  ย ย

KATE THE GREAT ย ย
Sophomore Katelyn Rosen showed competitive greatness last week at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, as she gave the Bruins a pair of 9.900s on uneven bars and balance beam and a 9.85 on floor exercise while competing early in the lineup. She placed second on bars and third on beam and is currently ranked No. 10 in the nation on bars. Rosen has hit 47 of 48 career routines, averaging over 9.8 on all four events. ย  ย  ย ย

BUYO BEAM QUEEN ย ย
Senior Emma Malabuyo has solidified her status as the Bruins' beam queen, scoring 9.900 and 9.925 in the Bruins' first two meets of the season. The 2024 Olympian ranks No. 8 nationally and has earned Top 2 finishes in both meets, winning the event at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad. She averages 9.862 on beam in her career and has nine scores of 9.950 or better, including one 10.0 and four 9.975s. ย  ย  ย  ย ย

BRUIN DEBUTS ย
Three Bruins made their collegiate debuts in the season opener, with sophomore Sydney Barros and freshmen Macy McGowan and Mika Webster-Longin seeing for the first time. Barros, who had not competed in a year and a half after suffering a torn ACL in the summer of 2023, earned a spot in the lineup on uneven bars and contributed a 9.550. McGowan had a strong first meet, earning Top 10 finishes on all three events on which she competed, scoring 9.850 on vault, 9.800 on bars and 9.775 on floor. Webster-Longin showed all four events, competing on vault and floor and performing exhibition routines on bars and beam. She produced UCLA's second-highest mark on floor with a 9.825 and added a 9.775 on her exhibition bars. McGowan and Webster-Longin also competed at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, with McGowan placing fourth on bars with a 9.875 and earning a new season best of 9.850 on floor. Webster-Longin competed on bars for the first time and hit a solid 9.825 to tie for eighth. She also hit a season-best on vault, scoring 9.750 on her Yurchenko 1.5. ย  ย  ย  ย

SUPER SENIORS
The Bruins return the services of two fifth-year seniors in Chae Campbell and Frida Esparza for their extra year of Covid-19 eligibility. Campbell is an eight-time All-American, three-time perfect 10 scorer on floor and the 2021 Pac-12 floor exercise co-champion and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Esparza earned all-conference honors on uneven bars as a freshman and owns career-highs of 9.950 on bars and 9.900 on beam. Campbell currently ranks No. 14 in the nation on floor exercise and No. 16 in the all-around. Esparza is coming off a first-place finish on bars at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, where she scored 9.925. ย ย

Sophomore Sydney Barros is back in action for her first year of competition in collegiate gymnastics. The 2023 Puerto Rican all-around national champion and World Championships qualifier missed the 2024 NCAA season after tearing her ACL at the 2023 Central American Games and made her Bruin competitive debut at the American Gold Classic, scoring 9.550 on uneven bars. Barros is a former three-time U.S. National Team member and bronze medalist at the 2019 Junior World Championships. ย  ย

BABY BRUINSย
UCLA welcomes a five-member freshman class in 2025, led by three-time Level 10 National champions Macy McGowan and Mika Webster-Longin. McGowan won the all-around, vault and floor at both the 2024 Nationals and Region 1 Championships. Webster-Longin was the 2023 all-around, bars and floor Level 10 national champion. She spent her 2024 competing elite with the Belgian National Team, seeing action at the DtB Pokal Competition in Germany and at the European Championships in Italy. Joining head coach Janelle McDonald and assistant coach BJ Das on the Bruin coaching staff in 2025 are assistant coaches Mark Freeman and Lacy Dagen. Freeman comes to UCLA from Stanford, where he served as an assistant coach of the four-time defending national championship men's team. He coached 2024 Olympic bronze medalists Brody Malone and Asher Hong, as well as 2020 Olympic alternates Akash Modi and Brandon Briones. Dagen was an assistant coach at Arizona State in 2024, helping guide the Sun Devils to the NCAA Regional final and No. 16 national finish. She also coached at her alma mater Oregon State in 2023, as well as at UC Davis in 2022.ย

Emma Malabuyo represented the Philippines at the 2024 Olympics and was the 2024 Asian Championships floor exercise champion and all-around bronze medalist and 2023 Asian Championships floor bronze medalist. Brooklyn Moors competed at the 2020 Olympics for Canada and was an all-around and floor finalist at three World Championships.
