No. 25 UCLA Downs Maryland in Straight Sets

LOS ANGELES – The No. 25-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team returned to its winning ways with a straight sets victory over Maryland on Saturday night inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Financial.
 
Set scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-20.
 
UCLA (12-8, 6-4 Big Ten) delivered one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season en route to its sixth conference win. The Bruins hit .321 as a team, marking their third-best clip of the year, powered by Cheridyn Leverette's 15 kills and a career-best .520 hitting percentage.
 
Maggie Li made an immediate impact in her return to the starting lineup, tallying 11 kills and eight digs in her first start since Sept. 6. Marianna Singletary dominated at the net, racking up eight blocks and adding eight kills on a .438 hitting line. Singletary also dealt a game-high three service aces.
 
Setter Kate Duffey notched her fifth double-double of the season with 35 assists and a career-high-tying 12 digs. Libero Lola Schumacher added 11 digs, reaching double figures in the category for the 14th time this season.
 
UCLA stormed out to a 6-0 lead behind back-to-back aces from Singletary and never looked back. Leverette added a pair of kills and Singletary notched her third ace to help extend the margin to 15-8. Li led the offensive charge with five kills in the frame, and the Bruins cruised to a 25-15 victory. UCLA totaled four service aces in the set, three coming from Singletary.
 
The Bruins opened set two with a 5-2 lead, sparked by a solo block from Anastasija Ivkovic. A 4-0 run capped by Li's sixth kill pushed the advantage to 10–5, and Leverette's back-to-back finishes made it 13-7. Maryland responded with a 5-0 run to close the gap to 16-14, but UCLA held firm behind Ivkovic's kill and Leverette's crafty tip. After Maryland tied it at 22-all, Singletary delivered two clutch blocks and Li finished the frame with a kill for set point. Leverette led all hitters with nine kills in the set.
 
Maryland jumped ahead 5-3, but UCLA answered with a 4-0 run fueled by Leverette, Singletary, and Li. The Bruins built a commanding 18–11 lead behind a block and kill from Li, forcing a Maryland timeout. The Terrapins trimmed the deficit to four, but Singletary sealed the match with a kill and a block to secure the sweep for UCLA.
 
The Bruins will gear up for a rivalry matchup with No. 22 USC on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. (PT) to kick off the second half of Big Ten play. The match will be broadcast nationally on Big Ten Network.
