Men's Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision to No. 25 Pepperdine

LOS ANGELES โ In a near-four-hour-long match that featured seven tiebreakers across its six singles contests, the UCLA men's tennis team fell 4-2 against No. 25 Pepperdine Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Linus Carlsson Halldin of the Waves (6-4) won a third-set tiebreaker in clinching fashion. Kaylan Bigun and Alexander Hoogmartens momentarily gave the Bruins (2-5) a 2-1 lead, but Edward Winter and Lasse Poertner ultimately joined Carlsson Halldin in prevailing for Pepperdine.
The Waves' 51st-ranked doubles tandem of Carlsson Halldin and Maxi Homberg took the first five games on Court 2 en route to a 6-1 victory against Rudy Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi. Quan and Tripathi had not played together during dual-match play, but went 2-2 together during the fall. The match on Court 3 stayed on serve until Poertner and Aleksa Pisaric broke for a 5-4 advantage. They would then hold to beat Gianluca Ballotta and Giacomo Revelli.
Four singles first sets were decided by tiebreakers, with each side prevailing in two. Before all of them were finished, Bigun collected his initial collegiate singles win. The freshman bested No. 32 Homberg 6-2, 6-3 on Court 2, leveling the team score. Another straight-set UCLA victory followed on Court 4, where Hoogmartens defeated Pisaric 7-6(3), 6-4. Hoogmartens has won four his past five singles matches.
Edward Winter pulled Pepperdine even on Court 1, beating No. 49 Quan 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. The visitors next added to their total on Court 5, as Poertner outlasted Tripathi 7-6(3), 7-6(5). Soon after, the remaining two matches both entered third sets.
On Court 6, Ballotta held multiple match points. In the end, though, he was unable to add a point to the Bruins' total. Carlsson Halldin would narrowly get the better of No. 63 van Loben Sels, 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(3) on Court 3, taking the final four points.
UCLA returns to action Saturday, Feb. 22, when crosstown rival USC visits Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve in the non-conference match is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
