UCLA Takes Down BYU 15-4 for Fourth Straight Win
February 18, 2025 | Baseball
UCLA (4-0) demonstrated impressive plate discipline by drawing 15 walks in the contest, its highest total since Feb. 18, 2024, when they recorded 13 walks against Gonzaga.
AJ Salgado provided the biggest swing of the night, a grand slam that sparked an explosive eight-run seventh inning that secured the Bruins' victory and put the game out of reach for BYU (2-3).
Roch Cholowsky and Jarrod Hocking enjoyed two hit days, as each hit a double and scored a pair of runs.
Wylan Moss was solid in his first college start, surrendering just one hit without allowing an earned run in his four innings of work. The freshman racked up six strikeouts and currently boasts a K/9 of 19.03 on the young season.
Cholowsky kickstarted the UCLA offense in the bottom of the first inning by roping a double into the right-center gap and later scoring on a wild pitch. The Bruins would not record another hit until Cholowsky delivered a clutch two-out RBI single in the home half of the third, doubling the team's lead.
Moss impressed by fanning five batters through the first three innings of his outing, highlighting his effort by striking out the side in the third frame. However, the Cougars broke through in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a UCLA throwing error with two outs.
In the top of the fifth, BYU rallied for three runs on three hits against UCLA's first bullpen arm, Michael Barnett. The Bruins loaded the bases in the bottom half, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity after falling victim to back-to-back strikeouts.
UCLA regained the advantage in the sixth, drawing six walks a hit-by-pitch to post a four-run inning in which the Bruins batted around the order.
With all the momentum on their side, the Bruins broke the game open after the seventh-inning stretch by rallying for eight runs to take a double-digit lead. UCLA drew six walks and a hit-by-pitch, then Salgado added an exclamation point with a towering grand slam over the right field wall.
Barnett settled down to get the next seven outs unscathed before handing the ball off to Justin Lee with one out in the eighth. Lee worked out of the jam by getting the last two outs in the inning and CJ Bott handled the ninth, navigating around a leadoff double to keep the Cougars off the board in the final frame.
Following a pinch-hit double from Toussaint Bythewood for the first extra base hit of his career, Cashel Dugger scored on a wild pitch to add on one more run for UCLA in the bottom of the eighth.
The Bruins will head to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Kleberg Bank College Classic beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 against hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. All matchups will take place at Whataburger Field, the home stadium of the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The game will be available for viewing on FloSports.
