Baseball Gears Up for Kleberg Bank College Classic

LOS ANGELES - UCLA baseball embarks on its first road trip of the season when it travels to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field. The Bruins will kick off the weekend by facing the hosts, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, on Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. PT (4 p.m. CT). On Feb. 22, UCLA will take on Washington State with a first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. PT (2 p.m. CT). The Bruins conclude the weekend with a game against Michigan State on Feb. 23 at 8:30 a.m. PT (10:30 a.m. CT). All three contests will be streamed on FloSports, with Brett Dolan on the call. After Roman Martin's go-ahead RBI single gave lifted UCLA to victory in Friday night's season opener, the offense exploded for 34 runs over the next two games to complete the three-game sweep over Cal Poly. UCLA won the series 37-4 on aggregate. The Bruins received some solid starts from Cody Delvecchio, Ian May, and Landon Stump, but the bullpen truly shined, combining for 11 scoreless innings, allowing just seven hits while striking out 17. UCLA's 18-run display on Saturday afternoon was the most runs scored since Feb. 18, 2023 when the Bruins scored 23 in their victory over Omaha.
UCLA won its first midweek contest of the season, taking down BYU 15-4 on Tuesday night. The Bruins trailed after five innings, but scored 13 runs over the next four frames to roll to its fourth consecutive win. UCLA drew 15 walks, its most since a 13-walk showing against Gonzaga on Feb. 18, 2024. AJ Salgado blasted a no-doubt grand slam in the seventh to put the game out of reach and Wylan Moss dazzled in his first collegiate start, striking out six batters in four innings without allowing an earned run.

UCLA won their only previous encounter with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in March 2010, securing an 11-3 victory at Whataburger Field during a preseason tournament hosted by TAMCC. The Islanders struggled on opening weekend, getting swept by Kansas in a four-game series. They were outscored 44-6 by the Jayhawks.

UCLA's leadoff hitter, Dean West, scored a team-high seven runs and slashed .500/.733/1.000 in the first weekend. The Woodland Hills native reached base in 11 of his 15 plate appearances, going 4-for-8 with six walks and a hit-by-pitch. West also flashed some power, launching his first career home run in the series finale against Cal Poly.

Seven Bruins made their collegiate debuts over the weekend, including position players Logan de Groot, Grant Gray, and Kasen Khansarinia. On the mound, Jack O'Connor, Wylan Moss, Josh Alger, CJ Bott toed the rubber for the first time in the college careers. Additionally, two transfers, Ian May and Ryan Rissas, made their UCLA debuts.
