No. 2 UCLA Men's Volleyball Breezes Past Vanguard, 3-0

LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep of Vanguard University in an MPSF match inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Saturday night.

Luca Curci led the Bruins (14-3, 4-0 MPSF) with seven kills on Saturday, while Sean Kelly and Ido David added six kills each. Trent Taliaferro and Andrew Rowan had 14 and 13 assists, respectively. As a team the Bruins hit .386 on the night, while limiting the Lions (6-11, 1-5 MPSF) to .154 hitting on the day.

In the first set the two sides traded points early on before the Bruins established a 9-6 lead courtesy of a kill by David.

Later on in the set Matthew Edwards came in and provided a service ace to put UCLA up 18-14. A point later Robinson and Christopher Hersh combined for the block to give the Bruins a five-point cushion, 19-14.

Robinson served up UCLA's second ace of the set to add to UCLA's total, and the Bruins led 23-16 in the closing stages. A few points later Rowan set up Kelly for the kill and UCLA took the first set 25-18, and went up 1-0 overall.

As for the second set, UCLA got on the board via a Coleman McDonough kill, before the Lions went on a mini 4-0 run to take a 1-4 lead in the set.

UCLA responded with a run of their own to tie the match at 4-4 courtesy of a kill by Robinson, before David slammed home another kill after being setup by McDonough and UCLA led 5-4.

David recorded UCLA's third ace of the night to put UCLA up 9-7 before Robinson and Matthew Edwards combined for the block and the Bruins led 10-7.

UCLA then took a 13-7 advantage courtesy of a monster run at the service line by David. The senior earned three aces in a row to put the Bruins up six points.

The Bruins rotated after that as Trent Taliaferro, Spencer Graves and Luca Curci all came in and UCLA extended its lead to 23-14. Curci then hammered home a kill to give the Bruins the second set, 25-16, and a 2-0 set lead

As for the third set, Vanguard established a 6-4 lead, before Micah Wong Diallo came in and immediately provided a kill, and the Bruins only trailed by one, 6-5.

UCLA and Vanguard traded points throughout the middle portion of the set, as neither squad were able to establish more than a three-point lead, until the Lions took a 14-10 lead.

Won Diallo recorded his second kill of the set, and made it a 15-12 Vanguard advantage. The two sides would trade points over the next portion of the set, as Vanguard took a 20-17 lead before Kelly recorded a kill to make it 20-18.

The Bruins rallied back and made it 22-22 courtesy of Curci dropping one down before David Decker put the Bruins up 24-22 courtesy of a service ace. A point later Wong Diallo slammed home his third kill of the set to give the Bruins the 25-22 set win and the 3-0 match win.

Up Next: UCLA continues MPSF play against No. 9 Pepperdine on Thursday, March 27. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm PT.
