ย
UCLA (21-5, 9-2 Big Ten) recorded its seventh consecutive winning weekend with the victory over Purdue (20-6, 3-5 Big Ten).
ย
The Bruins led by four runs heading into the bottom of the ninth but allowed three runs to score in the final frame. Jack O'Connor climbed the hill with the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate, but the right-hander showed excellent composure to pull off the incredible escape job and earn his first career save.
ย
UCLA saw eight of its nine starters record a hit, including six multi-hit performances in a team effort that included 17 total knocks. This was the second-most hits in a game this season for the Bruin offense, just one shy of its 18-hit showing against Cal Poly on Feb. 15.
ย
Mulivai Levu spearheaded the offensive explosion with his first career four-hit day at the plate. UCLA's first baseman drove in three runs and scored two more while becoming the team's leading hitter, increasing his batting average to .340 on Saturday afternoon.
ย
Roman Martin went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to bring his average above the .300 mark, while Roch Cholowsky, Jarrod Hocking, AJ Salgado, and Cashel Dugger all enjoyed two-hit performances.
ย
Ian May (4-1) recorded his fourth win of the season following a solid relief outing. The transfer from California threw four innings, surrendering two earned runs on two hits.
ย
Cholowsky launched his eighth home run of the campaign, equaling Levu for the team-high in the long ball category.
ย
UCLA struck first with a massive two-out rally in the second inning, scoring five runs to build an early lead. Salgado and Dugger drew walks to set the table for West, who ripped a double to right-center to bring in the game's first run. Purdue elected to intentionally walk Cholowsky to load the bases for Levu, who smacked a line drive up the middle for a two-RBI single. Martin followed with another run-scoring base hit, then Hocking capped off the five-run frame with another two-out knock to complete the Bruins' impressive rally that included a total of five hits and three walks.
ย
Purdue answered, however, with five runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game and chase starting pitcher Michael Barnett out of the contest.
ย
UCLA regained the lead in the fourth when Cholowsky doubled to lead off the inning before Levu promptly drove him home with his third hit of the game. In the fifth, the Bruins extended their lead to two when Phoenix Call lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Salgado, who had tripled earlier in the inning.
ย
A pair of defensive mishaps allowed the Boilermakers to score twice and tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.
ย
Cholowsky ignited UCLA's five-run sixth inning with a solo home run to lead off the frame. After Levu was hit by a pitch, Martin smashed a 1-2 pitch for a double to left field, scoring him from first base. Hocking followed with a single to bring in another run, then Dugger flared an RBI base hit into short center. West capped off the Bruins' second five-run inning of the game with an RBI groundout.
ย
Purdue's Logan Sutter hit a two-run homer in the sixth to cut the deficit to three.
ย
Martin did some more damage in the seventh when he hit his second double of the game, stole third base, then came around to score on a throwing error to push UCLA's advantage to four.
ย
After August Souza tossed a scoreless eighth, the Bruins ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth when Justin Lee allowed a hit and plunked two batters to load the bases with no outs. A single brought two runs around to score, and Purdue still had runners on first and second with no outs.
ย
Head Coach John Savage turned to the right-hander, O'Connor, to get the final three outs in the tumultuous situation. O'Connor got the first hitter to ground out to second base, but both runners advanced into scoring position as the Boilermakers rolled over to the top of their order.
ย
With one out, Purdue's leadoff batter hit a sharp ground ball to Cholowsky's right at shortstop. In the game's most crucial moment, Cholowsky saw the runner advancing from second to third and quickly fired to Martin, who applied the tag for the second out of the inning. O'Connor did the rest, striking out the final batter looking, allowing UCLA to breathe a sigh of relief and escape with the 13-12 victory.
ย
The Bruins will return to Alexander Field tomorrow for the series finale at 9 a.m. PT (12 p.m. ET). The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
