Martin, Gasparino Power No. 1 UCLA to 5-2 Victory and Seventh Straight Big Ten Sweep
April 19, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team completed its seventh straight Big Ten sweep on Sunday afternoon, riding home runs from Roman Martin and Will Gasparino to a 5-2 win over Minnesota at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
The Bruins (36-3, 21-0 Big Ten) paired another standout pitching performance with timely power to remain perfect in conference play.
ย
Martin powered the offense with a 2-for-2 day, reaching base four times and launching his sixth homer of the season, a towering 420-foot shot in the third. Gasparino added the exclamation point in the sixth, crushing his 15th home run of the year, a two-run blast that stretched UCLA's lead.
ย
At the top of the order, Dean West continued to set the tone, collecting two hits and scoring once.
ย
On the mound, Landon Stump delivered 4.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits before handing things off to the bullpen. Jack O'Connor (1-0) earned his first win of the season, and the trio of Ian May, Cal Randall, and Easton Hawk combined for 3.1 hitless innings to close it out.
ย
Hawk capped his dominant weekend with his third save in as many days, needing only six pitches in a perfect ninth to seal the sweep.
ย
UCLA jumped in front early with a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. West set the tone by ripping a leadoff single to center, and Cholowsky followed with a double down the left-field line to put two runners in scoring position. A balk brought home the inning's first run, and Martin legged out an infield single to score Cholowsky, capping the Bruins' two-run frame.
ย
The Bruins tacked on another run in the third when Martin unloaded a towering 420-foot blast to left-center, a no-doubt solo shot that stretched the lead to three.
ย
Minnesota got one back in the fourth, manufacturing a run on two hits and a UCLA error. The Gophers added another in the sixth when Weber Neels hit a solo home run, cutting the lead to one.
ย
UCLA replied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Gasparino punished a hanging breaking ball, sending it deep over the wall in left for a two-run blast that restored the three-run advantage.
ย
Gasparino's blast would prove to be the decisive blow as the Bruins' bullpen held in down in the late stages of the contest. May completed his outing by retiring four straight hitters, Randall struck out the side in the eighth, then Hawk pitched a perfect ninth to complete the sweep for UCLA.
ย
The Bruins host Hawaii for a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 21, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. PT. The contest will be broadcast nationally on Big Ten Network.
