No. 2 UCLA Men's Volleyball Beats No. 10 Stanford, 3-1

LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team took down No. 10 Stanford 3-1 inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Thursday evening to open MPSF. Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, and 25-19.
Trent Taliaferro made his first collegiate start on Thursday, getting the starting nod at setter. The freshman paced the offense with 47 assists, as the offense hit .416 on the night. He also added three aces and three blocks.
Cooper Robinson led the squad with 16 kills and hit .464 for the night, while Zach Rama added 15 kills, five digs and three blocks. Ido David set a season-high in kills with 14, hit. 632 on the night, and tallied a team-high four aces.
The Bruins opened a 3-1 advantage to begin the first set, unfortunately for the Bruins (11-3, 1-0 MPSF) the Cardinal (7-7, 0-1 MPSF) took momentum from their and took a 14-10 lead to force a Bruins timeout. After that timeout the Bruins responded and closed the gap to 16-13, courtesy of a Clini ace, and then 17-15 off a kill from Thorne which was assisted by Trent Taliaferro.
With the Bruins down 24-22 in the first set, UCLA fended off an initial set point to make it 24-23 before Stanford took the first set on the next point 25-23.
The Bruins responded to begin the second set, taking an 8-3 early lead courtesy of a huge block by Taliaferro and McQuiggan.
The Cardinal clawed their way back in, and made it a 2-point game, 17-15, before Thorne and Taliaferro combined for a huge block to put UCLA up 18-15 in the set.
With UCLA up 24-21, David Decker came in to serve for the set point, and applied the pressure leading to a Stanford attack error to give UCLA the set, 25-21.
In the third set the Bruins opened up an 8-5 lead with Ido David connecting on his BLANKTH service ace of the match.
Stanford clawed their way back though and tied the set at 10-10, before the Bruins took three of the next four points to take a 13-11 lead.
Robinson added another kill to put the Bruins up 19-16, before UCLA took the third set 25-21 when Rama slammed down a kill off a dish from Taliaferro and opened up two sets to one lead.
As for the fourth set, the Bruins controlled the tempo and jumped out to a 6-3 lead courtesy of David, who finished the match with double digit kills.
Robinson then added another kill as did David to put the Bruins up 20-16 in the set. Thorne and David then combined for a huge block to give the Bruins a five-point lead, 21-16, before UCLA closed it out with another block by Mcquiggan and Rama to seal the set 25-19.
