No. 6 Softball Closes Dominant Week with 12-0 Win at LMU

March 09, 2025 | Softball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 6-ranked UCLA softball team recorded its fourth mercy-rule victory of the week, defeating LMU 12-0 in five innings in a non-conference contest at Smith Field Sunday afternoon.

The Bruins (23-4) finished the week 5-0 and outscored their opponents 51-6 over 28.0 innings. Junior Jordan Woolery was responsible for two of UCLA's three three-run homers in the game against the Lions (8-17). The performance marked Woolery's third career multi-homer game and second in as many weeks (last versus Utah on Feb. 28). Woolery improved her season home run total to a team-high 12, which bested her previous season high of 10 set during each her freshman and sophomore years.

Woolery also set a new career high in runs batted in with six, surpassing her previous mark of five set last week. She leads UCLA with 43 RBI this season.

"Coach Lisa (Fernandez) just tells us to get good pitches and I feel like that's the best mindset you can have going into each game," said Woolery about her approach at the plate. "If you get a good pitch to hit, that's the hardest part honestly – not chasing the pitcher's pitches. And hitting it hard, too. For me, I saw that yesterday. I was hitting it hard but right at people, so surrendering to the process and trusting it today that I was going to get outcome eventually."

UCLA has now homered in 10 consecutive games – with 24 total homers in that span – for the team's longest streak since 2021. The Bruins left the yard in 12 straight contests spanning from April through May that year.

UCLA has totaled 44 blasts on the season for an average of 1.63 homers per game – its best rate since UCLA's 2010 NCAA title year. All 10 Bruins who have hit a home run this season have done so multiple times, led by Woolery with 12 and Megan Grant with 10.

Freshman Sofia Mujica went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and hit the first of UCLA's trio of three-run shots. The Bruins put together a two-out rally in the second inning to score the game's first runs. Left fielder Rylee Slimp sparked a string of four straight batters reaching base with a single up the middle. Slimp was brought home by Mujica's double that rolled to the wall. Mujica later scored from second base on Kaitlyn Terry's second two-bagger of the year, providing UCLA with an early 2-0 lead.

Slimp finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs scored. She now leads UCLA with a .449 batting average (31-for-69) and is one of four Bruins hitting above a .400 clip this season. Slimp has recorded multiple base hits in five of her last nine games.

The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez took a pitch-by-committee approach to today's ballgame, with Jada Cecil, Addisen Fisher and Terry all pitching at least 1.1 innings. The Bruins took a no-hitter into the fifth inning for a third time this week, and the second time against LMU. The Lions' leadoff hitter Sakora Harvell broke up the bid with a single to open the bottom of the fifth.

Cecil, who started the game, did not allow a baserunner and struck out two in her 2.0 innings. Fisher, who was credited with her ninth win of the year (9-0), also struck out a pair and allowed a pair of walks in her 1.2 innings of relief. Terry closed in out in with three strikeouts against the six batters she faced.

Mujica delivered more two-out damage in the bottom of the third with her homer out to left field to push the lead to 6-0. Freshman Kaniya Bragg plated a run earlier in the inning with a ball hit off the end of her bat that dribbled to second base for enough time to allow Savanah Pola at third base to score.

Pola finished 2-for-3 with a team-high three runs scored. She ranks second behind Slimp with a .443 batting average (39-for-88) and is tied with Jessica Clements for the team lead with 13 multi-hit games.

Woolery recorded each of UCLA's last two run-scoring hits with her three-run bombs in the fourth and fifth innings.
