Fakih, Bruins Down Trojans in Top-20 Matchup
April 16, 2025 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The 19th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team earned its sixth consecutive win Wednesday afternoon, beating No. 16 USC 4-2 in Big Ten Conference action at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Kate Fakih earned her fourth clinching victory in the past five matches. Also triumphant for the Bruins (13-7, 8-3 in Big Ten play) on the singles courts were Olivia Center and Kimmi Hance. Jana Hossam and Grace Piper each won for the Trojans (13-6, 7-4).
In the matchup of top-20 pairs on Court 1, No. 18 Hance/Elise Wagle broke the serve No. 10 Piper/Lily Fairclough for a 2-1 advantage. That proved to be the only break as Hance/Wagle prevailed 6-4 for its ninth ranked win. No. 6 Center/Fakih took five of the first six games on Court 2 and rode that to a 6-2 clinching result over Hossam/Sloane Morra. Center and Fakih have paired to clinch a team-high nine doubles points.
Four singles first sets went the way of UCLA. No. 71 Piper would strike first, though, handing No. 26 Lutkemeyer a 6-1, 7-5 defeat on Court 1. The tie would be short-lived, however, as Center put the Bruins back in the driver's seat with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Maia Sung on Court 6.
The UCLA lead grew to 3-1 when No. 106 Hance bested No. 58 Charney 6-4, 6-2 on Court 2. The senior Hance completes her career a perfect 8-0 in singles and doubles matches played against USC at home.
Hossam momentarily pulled the Trojans back into striking distance when she overcame Ahmani Guichard by a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 count on Court 5. No. 63 Wagle was nearing a victory of her own on Court 3, but No. 41 Fakih did the honors once more.
In a matchup of defending Big Ten weekly award winners, Freshman of the Week Fakih downed Player of the Week Fairclough 7-6(5), 6-4 to decide matters. Fakih has now clinched wins against Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska and USC since April 5.
The Bruins continue their final regular-season homestand Friday, when Maryland comes to LATC. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
