Front-Court Trio Leads No. 19 Women's Tennis to Sweep of Maryland
April 18, 2025 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The 19th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team won its seventh match in a row Friday afternoon, beating Maryland in Big Ten Conference play at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The front-court singles trio of Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle won in order for the Bruins (14-7, 9-3 in Big Ten play). Each also had a hand in securing the doubles point. The Terrapins (14-10, 7-5) claimed singles first sets across the back courts, but were unable to get on the board.
Lutkemeyer/Ahmani Guichard earned the day's first win and the pair's ninth in 10 decisions, beating Tamari Gagoshidze and Oliwia Orlinska by a 6-2 count. The dual-match victory put Guichard/Lutkemeyer in the team lead with 14, as Bruins Olivia Center and Kate Fakih were unable to add to their total. No. 66 Danielle Hack/Kallista Liu took down No. 6 Center/Fakih 6-4 on Court 2, turning all eyes toward Court 1.
UCLA's senior duo of Hance and Elise Wagle, ranked 18th-nationally, went up a break within its first three games with Diya Challa and Ema Kovacevic. That proved to be the difference in a 6-4 decision. Hance/Wagle has won five straight finished contests.
No. 26 Lutkemeyer increased the Bruin lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Liu on Court 1. A domino effect followed, with Courts 2 and 3 following suit.
On the eve of their Senior Day, No. 106 Hance and No. 63 Wagle delivered Friday's final points. Hance bested Kovacevic by another 6-1, 6-3 score and Wagle topped Hack by a 6-3, 6-2 margin. The clincher was Wagle's third of the season.
UCLA completes its regular season Saturday with a visit from Rutgers. First serve from LATC is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT. Senior Day festivities honoring Hance and Wagle will begin at 11:50 a.m. PT.
