Stellar Seniors Help No. 19 Women's Tennis to Sweep of Rutgers
April 19, 2025 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – Standout Senior Day performances by Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle paced the 19th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team to a 5-0 win in Big Ten Conference action Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins completed their regular season on an eight-match winning streak.
Hance and Wagle clinched the doubles point in comeback fashion and each went on to win in singles play, with Wagle sealing the final result. Also triumphant for UCLA (15-7, 10-3 in Big Ten play) on the singles courts were Bianca Fernandez and Ahmani Guichard, who tacked on the fifth point moments after Wagle finished. The Scarlet Knights finished their campaign with a 7-14 record (1-12).
The all-freshman combination of Bruins Olivia Center and Kate Fakih, ranked sixth nationally, capped its debut dual-match regular season with a 14-4 record after beating Zeynep Ilker/Minchae Kim by a 6-4 score on Court 2. Center/Fakih earned a couple breaks of serve to lead 5-2 before holding on for the final result.
Hance and Wagle, who were honored prior to the match, held serve in their first game on Court 1. The Rutgers team of Naomi Kirk/Mai Nguyen, though, took the next five games to put their counterparts behind the eight ball with few chances to recover. A hold would lead to a break as No. 18 Hance/Wagle gradually dug itself out of the hole. In the end, the Bruins collected the final six games for a 7-5 victory – the pair's sixth in a row.
All six singles first sets went to UCLA, with Fernandez, Guichard and Hance each dropping just one game. No. 106 Hance topped her effort in the second, prevailing 6-1, 6-0 versus Nguyen on Court 1.
Fernandez was next to finish, putting on a 6-1, 6-2 display against Karki on Court 6. The dual-match singles win was the sophomore's second in 2025.
Guichard and Wagle raced to the finish on Courts 3 and 4, but both ended up prevailing simultaneously. No. 63 Wagle held off Zuzanna Frankowska 6-2, 6-4 on Court 2, securing her second clinching victory in as many matches and fourth this season. Already in the middle of her point on Court 4, Guichard then finished off Jackeline Lopez by a 6-1, 6-3 count.
Next up for the Bruins in the 2025 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. Play begins Thursday, April 23 and continues through Saturday, April 26. UCLA will initially take the courts Thursday, April 24, in quarterfinal-round action.
