No. 21 Men's Tennis Outlasts Nebraska in Regular-Season Finale

LINCOLN, Neb. โ Kaylan Bigun secured the deciding point as No. 21 UCLA men's tennis defeated Nebraska in a 4-1 thriller at Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The Big Ten Conference match was the Bruins' regular-season finale.
Alexander Hoogmartens and Rudy Quan were also triumphant on the singles courts for UCLA (13-8, 11-2 in Big Ten play), which heads into the postseason on a five-match winning streak. The Bruins also claimed the doubles point. Five singles matches went to third sets and three were finished. Anton Shepp picked up a singles win for the Cornhuskers (15-8, 8-5).
UCLA's doubles pair of Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels continued to find success on Court 3, beating Nikolay Sysoev/Colson Wells 6-3. Ballotta/van Loben Sels moved to 11-3 on the season. Then, on Court 2, Bruins Spencer Johnson and Aadarsh Tripathi stayed perfect as a tandem. The pair secured the final three games to defeat Shepp/Henry Bilicic 6-3 and clinch the initial point. Johnson and Tripathi are 3-0 together since first teaming up April 13.
In the day's only straight-set decision, Hoogmartens bested Lars Johann 6-4, 6-4 on Court 4. Hoogmartens has won five straight matches and leads his team with a 15-4 dual-match singles record.
In the day's only ranked matchup, No. 23 Quan knocked off No. 63 Calvin Mueller 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Court 1. Quan has won four straight decisions, taking down three nationally-ranked players during that time.
Shepp trimmed Nebraska's deficit to 3-1 with his 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against No. 86 van Loben Sels. That left three matches to be decided and each of them went deep into a third set.
With No. 28 Johnson in a tiebreaker on Court 5 and No. 110 Tripathi trailing 5-6 on Court 6, Bigun provided the heroics. The freshman outlasted Sysoev 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(6) on Court 3 for his second clincher of the week and third of the season.

UCLA next heads to Ohio State's Ty Tucker Tennis Center for the Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament. Action begins Thursday, April 24 and continues through Sunday, April 27. The Bruins will start play in the Friday, April 25 quarterfinal round.
