No. 7 Softball Holds on to Beat Michigan, 5-3

April 26, 2025 | Softball

ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ€“ The No. 7-ranked UCLA softball team staved off a late-game comeback to defeat Michigan, 5-3, in a Big Ten Conference contest at Carol Hutchins Stadium Saturday evening.
ย
Right-handed starting pitcher Taylor Tinsley led the Bruins (43-7, 14-3 Big Ten) in the circle to pick up her 11th win of the season while surrendering three runs, only one of which was earned. Tinsley finished her outing with six strikeouts.
ย
UCLA's offense was highlighted by a 2-for-4 performance by junior third baseman Jordan Woolery who doubled in a run and hit a solo shot for her 19th homer of the year. The homer improved Woolery's season RBI total to 70, which is tied for eighth-most in UCLA single-season history. Woolery is one home run shy of joining classmate Megan Grant in the 20 homer club this season. Graduate center fielder Jessica Clements tallied her fourth three-hit game of ย the season and the 17th of her career, going 3-for-4 with an RBI double.
ย
After a two-inning scoreless drought, Woolery hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the fifth and give UCLA a 4-0 cushion going into the home half. For the first time of the night, the Wolverines (32-16, 9-8 Big Ten) leadoff hitter reached base in the form of a single through the right side by Ellie Sieler. Another single by Maddie Erickson put two on base with nobody out. Tinsley fanned the next two batters, Maddie Ramey and Ava Costales, to bring up Michigan's batting average leader Indiana Langford. Langford bounced a slow chopper to shortstop Kaniya Bragg whose forced throw went wide right of Grant at first base, allowing one run to score. Grant attempted to gun down Langford advancing to second, but her throw sailed into left field which allowed a second unearned run to score on the play and cut UCLA's lead in half at 4-2.
ย
For a second straight inning, Michigan's leadoff hitter Lauren Putz reached on a base hit to right field. The next batter, Ella Stephenson, hit a weak fly ball in left field foul territory that was caught by a sliding Rylee Slimp against the wall. Putz was able to advance to second base on the play. Seiler drove in Putz to score with her second single in as many innings on a ball that bounced awkwardly away from Slimp's momentum, erasing any chance at a successful throw out at home. The play trimmed the Bruins' lead to just one run, 4-3.
ย
Pinch hitter Sofia Mujica hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to score a crucial insurance run for relief pitcher Addisen Fisher. Fisher retired Michigan's 8-9-1 hitters in order to secure the first save of her collegiate career and a 5-3 UCLA victory.
ย
Jessica Clements helped manufacture the Bruins' first run of the contest with a lead-off slap single to third base in the first inning. Two pitches later, Clements took off for second base and slid in well ahead of the throw. Savannah Pola walked on four pitches to put two on for the heart of the batting order. The Bruins' No. 3 and 4 hitters, Woolery and Grant, were unable to cash in on the early scoring opportunity. Freshman Kaniya Bragg delivered with two outs, punching a single through the right side to score Clements from second base and give UCLA an early 1-0 lead.
ย
Tinsley retired the Wolverines' first three batters โ€“ Indiana Langford, Jenissa Conway and Lauren Putz โ€“ in order on 11 pitches for her first inning of work. The trio of Michigan hitters each entered the ball game hitting for .390 average or better.
ย
The Bruins used clutch two-out hitting and speedy baserunning once more to score in the second inning. Kaitlyn Terry, the Bruins' No. 9 hitter, sparked the two-run second on a slap a single up the middle with two outs. On the next pitch, Terry swiped second for her sixth stolen base of the year (6-for-6 SB-ATT) to put a runner in scoring position for Clements. On a 1-1 count, Clements drilled a pitch into the left-center gap for her second hit of the game (double) to easily score Terry and extend UCLA's lead to 2-0. After a walk to Pola, Woolery recorded the Bruins' second double in the inning with a ball hit into the left field corner to trade places with Clements.
