No. 14 UCLA Handles Northwestern, 8-2, to Even Series

LOS ANGELES – The No. 14-ranked UCLA baseball team evened the series with its 8-2 win over Northwestern on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCLA (38-15, 21-8 Big Ten) enters the final day of the regular season in a three-way tie atop the Big Ten standings. With Iowa and Oregon facing each other tomorrow, the Bruins can secure a share of the conference crown with a win in tomorrow's regular season finale.
Roch Cholowsky continued his fantastic sophomore season, blasting his 20th home run of the campaign, which marks the most by a Bruin since Cody Decker hit 21 homers in 2009. The shortstop collected three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle while driving in two and scoring three times.
Roman Martin matched Cholowsky with three hits, while Mulivai Levu added two hits and pushed his RBI total to 68. This is the highest mark by a UCLA player since Forrest Johnson's 78-RBI season in 2000.
The Bruins built an early lead in their first trip to the plate when Levu ripped a two-RBI double down the right-field line to score Dean West and Cholowsky.
UCLA's three-run second inning was fueled by Cholowsky's two-run bomb off the batter's eye in center field. The rally continued when Roman Martin smacked an RBI single, scoring Levu to extend the advantage to five runs.
Michael Barnett (10-1) earned his league-best 10th win of the year, working 6.1 strong innings with eight strikeouts while yielding just two runs. It marked the first time a Bruin starter reached the seventh since Barnett's outing against Indiana on March 22.
Northwestern strung together three straight hits to plate two runs in the fifth, but Barnett limited the damage by striking out one and inducing a ground out to strand a runner at third.
Cholowsky sparked UCLA's two-run response in the sixth with a line-drive double in the gap. After Levu was hit by a pitch and Martin reached on an infield single, AJ Salgado's sacrifice fly and Payton Brennan's RBI ground out pushed the lead back to five.
After Barnett departed following a leadoff single in the seventh, Salgado preserved the lead with a spectacular wall-climbing catch in right field, robbing Northwestern of a two-run homer.
Cal Randall was the next hurler for UCLA and he retired every hitter he faced to log 1.2 perfect innings of work. He handed the ball off to Easton Hawk in the ninth and the freshman recorded the last three outs to end the ballgame.
UCLA will take on Northwestern in regular season finale at 1 p.m. PT. Seven Bruin seniors will be honored prior to first pitch, with the Senior Day ceremony set to begin at 12:30 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
