Bruins Handle Aztecs, 10-0, to Advance to Regional Final
May 17, 2025 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 9-seeded UCLA softball team recorded six extra-base hits to defeat San Diego State, 10-0, in six innings for its second straight mercy-rule win to open NCAA Regionals at Easton Stadium Saturday afternoon.
ย
The Bruins (51-10) awaits their opponent in tomorrow's Regional Final scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (PT). UCLA looks to make its 15th Super Regional appearance as a program.
ย
"I'm going to credit (associate head coach) Lisa Fernandez in recruiting," said the Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez. "You know, we get the right athletes to play at UCLA. They're selfless. They're fierce. They play for each other. There's a work ethic about them. They're playing for something that's bigger than all of us, which is UCLA."
ย
Junior third baseman Jordan Woolery spearheaded the Bruins' offensive attack behind her 2-for-2 performance with a home run, triple and five runs batted in. Graduate center fielder Jessica Clements also had a productive day, going 3-for-3 with a double, walk and scoring three runs.
ย
UCLA, playing as the designated visitors, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead just eight pitches into the ballgame. A lead-off double by Clements down the left field line and a bunt single by Savannah Pola brought Woolery, the Bruins' leader in RBIs, to the plate. Woolery took Aztecs (38-18) starter Cece Cellura's 3-1 delivery for a ride to left-center field for her 21st home run of the year.
ย
Woolery ballooned her season RBI total to 81, which is second-most in UCLA single-season history. She trails Stacey Nuveman's mark of 91 RBIs set in 1999.
ย
Sophomore two-way player Kaitlyn Terry held down duties in the circle with her fourth complete-game shutout of the year. Terry struck out five and allowed just two hits and one walk while improving her record to 18-4.
ย
Terry's most impressive display against San Diego State came in the bottom of the third when she worked out of a bases-loaded jam in a 35-pitch inning. A walk and slap single put two aboard with one away for the Aztecs' top hitter Cali Decker. Decker bounced a ball to shortstop that was mishandled by a charging Kaniya Bragg to fill the bases. On the seventh pitch of the next at-bat to San Diego State's No. 4 hitter Angie Yellen, Terry induced a sharply-hit grounder again to Bragg who went the short way to second base for the inning-ending force out.
ย
Terry proceeded to retire the final Aztec hitters consecutively to send San Diego State into the loser's bracket.
ย
The Bruins scrapped their first run together since the first inning in the top of the fourth. No. 9 hitters Terry and Clements opened the frame with a bunt base hit and single back up the middle, respectively. A line-out double play off the bat of Savannah Pola derailed UCLA's chances. However, after scoring all nine runs with two outs in the Regional opener versus UC Santa Barbara on Friday, there was still hope. Woolery delivered with a triple to shallow right field that skirted underneath the glove of a sprinting Grace Uribe. Clements scored on the play on Woolery slid foot-first into the third base bag, extending the lead to 4-0.
ย
UCLA blew the game wide open in the sixth inning with six runs off four hits and two San Diego State errors to push the game into run-rule territory. Back-to-back doubles by freshmen Rylee Slimp and Kaniya Bragg pushed the first run across. After a hit-by-pitch to Taylor Stephens, Terry dropped a single into right field and pinch runner Lauren Hatch wheeled went into full steam. Hatch was waved around third base by Fernandez and was tagged out on the play by Decker, the catcher. After a successful challenge by the Bruins, the call was overturned and Hatch was ruled safe by obstruction. Woolery drove in her fifth and final RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Grant tacked on the final two runs of the game next with her first triple of the season on a shot off the top of the center field wall.
