Bruins Fall to WCWS Elimination Bracket after Loss to Texas Tech

May 31, 2025 | Softball

OKLAHOMA CITY โ€“ The No. 9-ranked UCLA Softball team fell to No. 12 Texas Tech, 3-1, Saturday at the 2025 Women's College World Series (WCWS).
ย
UCLA (55-12) will continue its journey at the WCWS in an elimination game against No. 7 Tennessee on Sunday, Jun 1, at 12 p.m. PT on ABC.
ย
The Bruins started to pressure Red Raiders (52-12_ pitcher Nijaree Canady in the bottom of the second. Megan Grant walked on five pitches before Rylee Slimp could bunt; Slimp outsprinted the throw from Canady after perfectly laying the ball down in front of home plate.ย With two on and one out, Kaniya Bragg remained patient in the batter's box, walking to load the bases. The Bruins were aggressive but couldn't capitalize in the frame; UCLA struck out before grounding into the end of the inning.
ย
Junior Taylor Tinsley got the start in the circle for UCLA. She held the Red Raiders hitless through four innings. Tinsley's battle with Red Raider bats began to pick up in the fifth inning. Texas Tech's Lauren Allred singled in the top of the fifth before Canady connected on a ball deep into the right field corner for a double. Grant fielded a ground ball and slung it home to tag out a hopeful Red Raider for out number two, but UCLA wouldn't get out of the fifth unscathed.
ย
Texas Tech got on the board first with a risky stolen base. Pinch runner Makayla Garcia remained hidden behind a right-handed batter as she sprinted towards home down the third-base line, sliding across the plate to score before the Bruins realized the robbery was happening. An unsuccessful UCLA challenge confirmed the Red Raider run โ€“ the Bruins exited the top of the fifth trailing 1-0 after a groundout ended the inning.
ย
The deficit didn't last long in Oklahoma City. Bragg immediately answered with a home run to right field as the first batter in the bottom of the fifth; the freshman infielder tied the game with her solo shot, her 10th of the season.
ย
ย
Texas Tech kept on coming in the late innings and proved too much for the Bruins on Saturday - Hailey Toney hit a home run late in the top of the sixth to add one run to the tally. With two outs in the seventh, Tech's Raegan Jennings hit a blooper to short center field; the Red Raiders' Alana Johnson made her way to home plate from second off the single. UCLA trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
ย
Despite a pair of seventh-inning singles, UCLA could not string together enough to overcome Canady's pitching prowess. UCLA left two on the bases as Texas Tech forced the final out in Saturday's game.
ย
The Bruins will play in their 150th WCWS contest on Sunday.
