UCLA Walks Off Indiana, 5-4, Advancing to Big Ten Tournament Semifinals
May 08, 2025 | Softball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. โ The No. 2 seed UCLA softball team used a seventh-inning rally to walk off No. 10 seed Indiana, 5-4, in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals at Bittinger Stadium Thursday afternoon.
ย
The Bruins (48-9) advance to tomorrow's semifinals where they will face No. 3 seed Nebraska at 2 p.m. (PT). Every game of the tournament will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
ย
UCLA, the designated home team, went to the bottom of the seventh in a 4-4 ballgame with the heart of its lineup โ Jordan Woolery, Megan Grant and Alexis Ramirez โ due up. Woolery opened the frame with a loud and long single off the left-center field wall that was roughly five feet away from being a walk-off home run. A single through the right side by Grant pushed pinch runner Rylee Pinedo, the game winning run, into scoring position. Ramirez walked on four pitches, loading the bases with no outs and placing Pinedo 60 feet away from home. The next batter, Rylee Slimp, hit a high-chopper back to Hoosiers (33-18) pitcher Brianna Copeland that allowed Pinedo plenty of time to sprint and dive head-first into home safely.
ย
The walk-off victory marked the Bruins' first of the season. UCLA last won in walk-off fashion last May against Virginia Tech in an NCAA Regionals contest.
ย
Woolery led the Bruins' offense with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance. She put UCLA's first runs on the board with a two-run homer to opposite field (right field) in the bottom of the first inning. The homer was Woolery's 20th longball of 2025, joining fellow Bay Area native classmate Grant (23) both with 20-plus home runs this season. Grant and Woolery are just the second UCLA duo to each hit at least 20 home runs each in a single season (last: 2015, Stephany LaRosa [20] and Delaney Spaulding [20 HR]).
ย
The Bruins' offense totaled 11 hits in the contest. Joining Woolery with multiple base knocks were Grant (2-for-4, 2B), Ramirez (2-for-3) and Savannah Pola (2-for-3).
ย
Grant continued to apply pressure in the top of the first on Indiana starter Copeland with a double into right field with only one out. Ramirez followed with a single into centerfield to place runners at the corners for Slimp. Slimp hit a routine double play ball to Hoosiers shortstop Alex Cooper that would have ended the inning, but Cooper booted the ball with her mitt into shallow right field, allowing a third run to score.
ย
Junior right-hander Taylor Tinsley started in the circle for UCLA and notched her ninth-complete game performance of the season. Tinsley (12-4) struck out one batter and surrendered four earned runs off seven hits en route to picking up her 12th win of the year.
ย
Ramirez also had an excellent game defensively behind the dish, gunning down two Indiana runners attempting to steal. The first hose job came in the top of the second to seal a shutdown inning for her batterymate Tinsley. ย
ย
Indiana broke through against Tinsley with a two-run, two-out rally the following inning. After putting two away with a pair of groundouts to begin the third, Tinsley gave up a bloop single to Copeland into shallow center field. Copeland was driven in on an RBI double by Avery Minnick that flew into the bottom of the right field wall. A third straight hit, this time a single by Avery Parker to left field, scored Minnick to trim UCLA's lead to one at 3-2.
ย
Pola delivered a timely two-out single into right field in the bottom of the fourth to add a key insurance run and stretch the lead to 4-2.
ย
The Hoosiers evened the score the next half inning in the top of the fifth. Copeland worked a walk after watching the first two pitches for strikes, putting a runner on board for Minnick. Minnick logged her second double of the game with a ball hit down the left field line to put Copeland's wheels in motion. Copeland scored, but was aided by two UCLA fielding miscues on the play: Woolery took Slimp's cut off thrown on the wrong side of her right-handed throwing body and her relay to home was mishandled by Ramirez who was unable to hold on to the ball through Copeland's slide into home.
